Joysticks
« on: January 17, 2012, 06:24:35 pm »

Primarily I'm posting this as I was curious what joysticks my fellow B12'ers are using as I'm looking to finally get one for myself. Secondarily this shall be open for general discussion of joysticks and joystick compatible games as well.

Currently what I am looking for is a joystick under $50 with twist action, of which I'm currently eying the Thrustmaster T-Flight Stick X. Some of the games that I plan on playing is the new Mechwarrior in development, Kerbal Space Program, possibly Evochron Mercenary (has anyone played this yet? looks similar to Freelancer), and several other misc games that I have which I think may support it. That said I am entertaining the thought of getting a Hotas setup provided I can convince my dad to help me out as I seem to recall he had some interest in flight simulators. Realistically whatever joystick setup I get probably won't see overly heavy use until the new Mechwarrior game comes out.

I use the Thrustmaster Hotas X http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=asc_df_B001CXYMFS1864467?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B001CXYMFS and I love it. It's worth the extra $ for the thrust control as it keeps your hands on the joystick. Speaking of hands on the joystick, there are 12 buttons on this thing and all are easy to customize. Good luck to you with whatever you choose.

I must've gotten a faulty one, because I never got any kind of precision from my T-Flight Stick X...

The Thrustmaster T16000M has server me for over a year now and is still as good as it was when I bought it. It has "hall sensors" which are supposed to be a whole lot more precise than whatever my Stick X had, and it also has a twist axis. The buttons all over it are OK but not perfect. I have small hands and I feel it's a bit too large for me.

Still, I'll take it over the Flight Stick X anytime. It's hard to find though...

I have an ancient Saitek Cyborg. If the new Mechwarrior turns out to be good, I might have to invest a new one. I also have some driving pedals that I've repurposed as rudder pedals. Just need a seperate throttle and I'd be good to go to get back into combat flight sims...

I've also heard a rumor that the Mechwarrior team is teaming up with a supplier to release a new joystick or endorse a particular one based on something they said in one of their Q&A sessions. Makes me even more hesitant to buy a joystick now despite having several games I wish to play with one...

Why does a Mech need a joystick? I remember playing the old Mechwarrior games, and the keyboard+mouse worked fine, just as in an FPS, as far as I remember.

Immersion? Besides that from what I understand using a joystick for mech/flying games makes maneuvering easier though in terms of actually aiming (ie sniping) the mouse is better.

I still wonder why most joystick brand names sound strangely "erotic".

Imagine a girl asking another girl "Can I lend your thrustmaster 2000?" in a public place...

I can't imagine it'll make maneuvering easier... at least, in MW. But it will make you feel like a MechWarrior and not some kid playing Call of Duty.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Well its what I've been told by people more experienced than I at MW. I think it has to do with torso twisting is smoother/easier with a joystick than via keyboard which should be superior to slightly better accuracy because you'd get more shots off on your target.

I use the Saitek AV8-er.  Has served me well for over a year now and has 2 thrust axis, roll, hat, three stick buttons, and like 6 toggle switches and a 3 way selector switch.

I think I might settle for the Thrustmaster Hotas X set up, from what I've been seeing in reviews it has a much higher average rating compared to similarly priced joysticks which don't even include the separate throttle like this one. Gonna take a trip down to the local Bestbuy to see if they might have any joysticks on display first though.
