It isn't inherently wrong to deviate from the original X-Com. Had they not, we'd just be holding the original X-Com with a significant graphical update.
Eh. Perhaps what I meant is that they shouldn't have so RADICALLY changed the ga- You know what?! *soapbox* I wish they had done exactly fucking that. The original XCOM, with upgraded graphics (really couldn't care less about that part), and all the bugs fixed (<-- more important), and some changes to make the game easier to play (imagine how much more enjoyable the game would be, just by adding some shortcut buttons for the inventory screen?). Then, once that had been done, there would be a fucking arseload of options that you could enable in order to slightly tweak or completely overhaul your experience. Really hope someone will come out with that kind of thing. They could even add in more stuff to manage. There's so many possibilities.. Also, since when does a freaking jet (especially an ALIEN ONE) cost one hundred and twenty-four dollars??!  *tears hair*  *screams for a bit*  *gets off soapbox*

*sigh*  Nevermind.. :-[

Credits =/= Dollars

The equipment you can just buy is either cutting edge, state of the art technology provided by the Council members or uses the components thereof in the manufacturing process. The credits presumably represent the vast resources needed to get these things and have been assigned to you. This is why things like basic armor, ballistic weapons, and frag grenades are provided to you in infinite quantities: they are below any significant cost to you because they are mundane.

I will say that the game isn't consistant with that interpretation... though it is the interpretation of Credits I chose to believe in.

Mostly where it falls flat is when nations try to pay you for weapons and give a vastly excessive amount for them.

That's not too flat. Because X-Com is the only group using credits, a member nation can easily offer an excessive amount of them in exchange for something they want, made more likely by the fact that X-Com has most if not all of the alloy and elerium on Earth.

Yeah but when you can get in a single exchange more then all the countries COMBINED fully protected can give you... for 7 plasma pistols... something they themselves could obtain.

It's implied that the other countries are really having a hard time with their research program, so they need the stuff from you so they can reverse engineer your work and actually build some of the items.

They can't really. Only X-COM has the capability to hunt down allium craft, shoot them out of the sky, capture an allium alive, and figure out how to use their weaponry (let alone build it). An individual nation might be able to do SOME of that, but not all.

I just translated credits into 100 million dollars. Made sense then.

Alien planes costing $12 600 000 000 might still be a little low though. Then again most of the materials come from alien craft itself, so really all you'd be paying for is... err... hrmmm... Well, research and development is already covered so... and manufacturing is automated and I assume the engineers are all paid already and this is accounted for out of the HR budget... and storage has also been accounted for when you paid for the hangar... so...

huh...

Maybe $126 is a fair assumption.

The real question is why research doesn't cost much money.

Because research is material-based, and thus costs materials. You don't need money to cut open a dead Chryssalid or examine the operation of a captured plasma weapon.

I suppose,

Another question is why it doesn't take resources to convert captured Guns into useable forms? Most guns are in unusable forms when obtained from the aliens. (Sectoid wrist-mounted pistols, heavy plasmas being too heavy to use, so on.) I suppose you might actually obtain a small amount of resources from converting the Heavy Plasmas, though.

The alloy seems to float around the plasma, so presumably once you've accessed the gun's computer you can make it reshape into a human-usable form. The research documents mention something like that.

It's implied that the other countries are really having a hard time with their research program, so they need the stuff from you so they can reverse engineer your work and actually build some of the items.

If you pay attention to those missions though they will outright say "Hey we need a few laser pistols (or plasma) to give to our police officers to disperse protestors" or something along those lines.

It is the only thing in the game that destroys the "Credits arn't dollar ammounts" theory... Yet I just chose to ignore it because it doesn't make sense.

I know that Rookies are considered world class elite soldiers.

Still a case of reverse engineering XCOM's work. If you go to the situation room and read the scrolling news bar, one of the messages for handing out laser pistols to a nation is, " 'X Nation' hands out small laser weapons to civilians, siting 'civil defense.' " There is no way 2-5 pistols could do that.
