More color! It looks good, but it looks off for some reason. Probably the colors I picked for the shadow and lighting? Maybe I should have used a darker red for shadow instead of green.

Made a tiny Flash movie for my Comm Tech class. Of a mining dwarf, of course. And he encounters magma, and a tragic end. All in sixty frames.

There's also a sound of mining.

Hmm, this gives me an idea. Make the DF opening movie - in Flash!

I think you should have, yeah. It looks a bit odd.

Ayup, shadow colour is based on the material that's in the shadow as well as the light source casting said shadow. Your light seems to be some sort of very pale blue? So a cool light, which means the shadows should be a nice red, desaturated to the point of just being warm enough but otherwise leaving most of the saturation to the bits in lit up by ambient light, and again, very little saturation on the bits directly hit by the light.

Anyways, after a long while, something painted for myself, have Barbatos:

I don't watch enough (hardly any) mecha animus  to know the reference, but I like the variation of detail used to focus attention on the facey-bits.

And, as promised, I have more texture/dissections.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I don't know any tutorials or really good hints, but if you get a great colourscheme before, and stay with it a lot, your work will look better whatever letters of ASCII you use.

With colours, using less is better, sometimes.

Certainly looks a lot more dynamic! It does look like they're turning from the perspective of the viewer. The arms look a little wonky in that light; maybe you could apply some foreshortening?

Otherwise I like it. Makes me think of graffiti on a wall. Biomechanical people come up a lot in your art, don't they? Sort of a running theme.
