A gem-encrusted . . . gemstone?
« on: January 02, 2012, 12:59:12 pm »

I told my jeweler to encrust a bunch of finished goods, and got this:

Quote
*«*large blue garnet*»*

This is a superior quality large blue garnet. It is encrusted with superior quality citrine and superior quality rose quartz and encircled with bands of finely-crafted gold opal. This object menaces with spikes of finely-crated schorl, superior quality milk quartz, superior quality pink tourmaline and superior quality pinfire opal.[/size]

Is this normal? How exactly does one affix a cut gemstone to another cut gemstone, with Superglue? I'm kind of surprised it only costs 3240 dwarfbucks, the thing sounds like a fist-sized dwarven disco ball.

Occasionally gems will be cut into large gems which count as a finished good, not a cut gem, therefore fair game for decoration of gems, bone and studs of metal

You should see what happens when a jeweler gets a strange mood, and decides to pick up your entire gem stockpile :d

To be fair, a dimond spiked with ruby and emeralds with topel encrustations would be mounted somewhere on my fort so hard.

Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).

That's very normal.  Every artifact will have a decoration of its base material.  An artifact platinum warhammer will menace with spikes of platinum, as well as whatever other materials were used.  In fact, bone artifacts were bugged and only took one item, making them the lowest value artifacts, and would have exactly one decoration - whatever the base material was.

The only jewel artifact I've seen so far is when a Gem Cutter made a perfect large something-or-other. [ADD: Oh yeah, I also got an entire bed carved from a single pinfire opal. That must have been interesting.] I imagine a Gem Setter would make something like what I described in the OP. Still, at least I can hang on to this thing until my civilization offers a premium on large gems, and sell it the following year.

To be fair, a dimond spiked with ruby and emeralds with topel encrustations would be mounted somewhere on my fort so hard.
Tru dat. I'm going to have to download (or DIY) the Display-Case mod, so my non-furniture artifacts (now including a low boot and a crutch) can have a place to be. My fortress's keep will eventually have a peaked glass roof, and I'd like to put something especially sparkly at the pinnacle, but without a way to nail it down, I doubt it'd last a year before some enterprising goblin thief gets a flying mount.

I assumed he encrusted it with the extra bits left over from when he was cutting it.
