I have a Verizon aircard and have direct line-of-site to a tower. When I connect I have four bars.

I normally get more than 80% packet loss, and looking at PingPlotter, it's all happening on their end.

Frankly this service is terrible. It's $60 a month for something significantly worse than dialup. It is the only "broadband" option, of course, because the organizations that regulate communications are owned by communications companies.

My average rate, accounting for losses, is probably 20-40 KB/S.

Does anyone know a good, cheap dialup ISP?

Call and bitch, it may take a while for them to do anything though.  Verizon has been having major network issues recently.

You don't want dailup.  The only reason you think it's worse than dialup is because you probably haven't used dialup recently.

Just... just re-emphasizing this. Because yeah. I still remember dial-up, very, very well. 20 kb/s was not a thing hat happened. 10 kb/s was not a thing that happened. You got 5, if you were lucky, with a 56k modem.

Is there any other options for broadband in your area? A land line would probably be more ideal, if it was possible, I think.

I have called them. They said it's due to interference, despite the fact that it had full signal strength.

Switch ISPs. I'm sure that there are other ISPs that would gladly take your $60 and give you better download speeds. Look around and see if you can try it for a month before signing contracts. It may be a bit of a hassle, but you don't want a long contract if the service is just as bad.

Since you can't switch ISPs I did a bit of Googling. I need to know, roughly when is the slowdown, and where are you? Being in a basement, or in a metal building will really hurt your download speeds, and peak usage times (6pm-12am in most places) will slow you to a crawl if there is a lot happening in your area.

Is 25kb/s normal when you're outside before peak times?

I literally just switched from 56k to some DSL that's boosted through our shitty phonelines.

Let me tell you the story of 1.8 to 2.3 kbps. It's a story you don't want to hear, so I'll skip to the end and just say NEVER, EVER SAY IT'S BETTER THAN WHAT YOU HAVE. Unless you're comfortable continuously finding 'Time Remaining For Download' to be in the days range, you probably shouldn't conceive it. If you treasure being able to buy Steam games and actually being able to play them without Steam just laughing in your face and saying it can't connect because your internet is so terribad, you really, really don't want to say that 56k is better. It's not 56kbps. It's some eldritch thing beyond the stars feasting upon the woe and misery of those most unfortunate few who must live and attempt to cope under its oppression.

I now have ~90 kbps when I'm the only one using the line. And I am free.

Can you get satellite internet?  It's downright awful too, but at least you get speeds approaching 120KB/s.  And a very strict download cap per day or per month, at least with Hughes.net or WildBlue.
