This is an easy one.
Since your corpses don't vanish, just jump in the pit thousands of times until you can safely
stand on the piles of sturdy carrion.

Thiis.

This.
This is the only logical answer.

But...maybe there is something about our corpses that signify the "DON'T DIE" part?

Kick or move the chest INTO the pit!!

Go south from the chest. There might be something to open it there.

Did we just get killed by the ghosts of our past selves?

Arms are too great a power for us to possess. We were over-proud, seeking to become as gods, and we were not ready.

Nah. He was just way over-exerted from dying like a bajillion times. (Oh, and in the animated image of the corpses piling up, we can see he did die a few times just because of the exertion and pain of a bajillion deaths.)

So he still feels the pain and/or tiredness from previous deaths?

I guess the moral of this story is not to kill yourself in a pit a million times just to cross.

So...this time, let's not use our respawning powers to meatshield our way across anything.

GO SOUTH. Stare at chest. Go South!

I think he's probably most tired from when the pit got shallower...  the fall alone wouldn't be enough to die.  Wouldn't be enough of a drop.  At a certain point he's like breaking his legs but still living.  He has to do something else to finish himself off so he can respawn.   ???

Well, that was a horrific way to solve this challenge. Good showing, chaps.
