[Linux] DF 31.25 and Fedora 16
« on: December 12, 2011, 07:33:19 pm »

So I have DF installed on Fedora 16. Game starts up fine, but every time I generate a world, the game never saves the generated world, so I can't ever play fortress mode.

I've got all the dependencies installed, but I've got no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Help?

If needed, I can post the output from a terminal as DF does worldgen.

I've been using GNU/Linux on and off for a while lately, so I might be able to help. Be warned that I've spent a grand total of about eight seconds using Fedora (argh, GNOME 3!). Not sure how far I'll be able to get. Anyway, post your terminal output and I'll take a look at it.

I actually use Fedora 16 with LXDE. Can't freaking stand Gnome 3.

Terminal output is soon.

Also, try this and post the output as well (it's a command-line option to open DF, generate a world, then quit):

Code: [Select]
cd /path/to/df
dwarfort.exe -gen 1 RANDOM STANDARD

If you need it, full documentation on that command can be found in "command line.txt" in your main DF folder.

Huh, this is odd.

Extracted DF into my /home/user/ folder instead of /home/user/Games/ and worldgen works now.

Bizzare.

Nothing of note in the terminal.

I'm currently WINE-ing DF on Fedora 14 (will upgrade in a bit).

Care to share your installation steps?

There's a GNU/Linux client of DF that can be run natively, so WINE isn't necessary. Just download, extract, and click on the 'df' executable.

Um, downloaded the Linux version. Unpacked the .tar.bz2 in /home/[username]/ . Opened terminal, cd df_linux, bash df

Okay I keep error while loading shared libraries: libSDL_image-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Wait, just kidding, I had to yum install a lot of stuff.

Big Thanks

Yeah, it takes a bit of work to get DF to install when you don't know the package names.

I've found that yum install --skip-broken [rpm] will spit out the names of the packages you need to install if you're missing any.

I've been using DF under wine in FC16. I'm running the 64bit version and apparently DF wont work with the 64bit libraries. Is there a way to use the 32bit ones?

And I haven't minded gnome3 at all and this is coming from an ardent gnome2 fan :P I added Tint2 to the mix and I couldn't be happier.

Fairly sure Fedora will allow you to install the 32-bit libraries if you have the 64-bit libraries installed. Mine did.

I've been keeping an eye, and supposedly Gnome 3.2 is very good since they now have all the extensions as-needed.
Any advice on the good extensions? Like, will I be able to Alt+~ by default between apps?

My big concern with DF is that I get a screen flicker every-now-and-then while it's running in F14 (also happened with Quake 4).
It freezes if I use fullscreen, otherwise its not bad. Maybe it's my video card, or maybe the newer NVIDIA drivers, so I may stick with default nouveau when I upgrade.

Use the actual NVidia drivers, as they have improved greatly for linux in the last couple of years.  Not sure what you mean by "running in F14" (Slackware/Gentoo user, not Fedora) but if it is freezing in fullscreen it could be due to bad or insufficient video memory.  Depending on how your driver is installed or configured it is possible the card isn't using its onboard memory (assuming it has that) or has insufficient system memory allocated for video use.
