Hello again.  8)

I'm going to aim to try this again without my earlier failure(s).
Here's the gist of it: this a LP using the Fortress Defense and MHU(Monster Hunter Universe mods.) For a detailed look at which files to install, check the spoiler below.

I'm keeping things pretty consistent with the usual LP/bloodline format: 1 year/overseer, exchange each spring. Dorf'd players and ex-overseers are encouraged to contribute with journal entries, etc.  ;D

EXPECT AT LEAST ONE SIEGE PER YEAR


Additionally, for extra challenge, there are a few stipulations:
- No trap spam. Traps should be placed sparingly and strategically. Our military should be our only real main line of defense. And we WILL need a great military, as both the fortress defense mod makes things very typical(not to mention monster hunter universe)
-The fortress will be built both above and below ground, with a central hall, food processing and storage, and industrial production below ground.
- Above ground will be a walled settlement with fortifications, a heavily defended keep with a jail and lavish noble quarters, a barracks and whatever other psuedo-medieval trappings we can come up with.
*These are more general guidelines. I'm not going to be policing people to ensure compliance with the building ordinances  :P.*

Diary of Ducim Ishlumcilbob, Expedition Leader.

25th of Obsidian, 125


We continue to trudge aimlessly through this cursed swamp. I fear our doom lies nigh, pre-arranged for us by the incompetence of those imbeciles in the Scribe-Hall of Settlement and Site Investigation with of one of their famed 'clerical errors'. Dwarf-folk are not fashioned for such travel. We are all reaching our breaking points - I fear that our sanity may be outlasted even by our dwindling provisions. If we do not reach the river, we shall now we are doomed to wander endlessly in this mire.

As I sit writing this, however, I feel myself moved by my fellow dwarf's labour. They are all stout, proud fold. I couldn't, in all fairness, ask for a better settlement party - none have complained. Yet I fear if we do not meet the river again their efforts will have all been for naught.



26th of Obsidian, 125

There is still no sign of the river; though we all attempt to conceal it, we are wearing thin. Morale is perilously low. Everyone looks as if they have lost at least twenty Urists."



27th of Obsidian, 125

No sign of the river. Kosoth has been observed muttering to himself. We are starting to look like a bunch of Armok-damned elves. I'm not sure how long we can maintain this. As if I needed any further problems, the wagon's axle is showing signs of rot. I've ordered our carpenter, Led, to take a look at it. She seems the most stable out of all of us; hopefully she'll be able to give us at least a temporary fix.

28th of Obsidian, 125

Praise be the Pantheon! We've bloody done it! The group has erupted in genuine joy for the first time in weeks. The river runs sluggish here, but still it flows. If our map is correct, it should lead us towards our site. The map had better be correct.


1st of Granite, 126.

We've made it! It almost has a certain beauty about it. But also a menace. I urge the miners to begin digging downwards. I designate several stockpiles, and initiate the transfer of goods from our decrepit wagon to the camp. This place shall be Aristkogan- Assaultboat. For as the boat conquers its element the, water, so shall we conquer ours. We are the new masters of this place.

 Thanks for the re-dorf.


The next update for the Tombhero would have contained lots of !!FUN!! Anderz's death drove the militia captain to butcher three other dwarves in a fit of berserk rage with her axe, leaving but two survivors, who may or may not have been trapped in an excavated cistern.

         Entry II: Attack from the Swamps!       

13th Granite, 126

Ducim Ishlumcibob looked over her first works with pride. The stockpiles lay piled with the goods they had brought, but also with the first gifts of Assaultboat's bounty; tall piles of wood, barrels packed full of fresh fruits and berries. Though the oppressive heat and stinging insects tested the dwarves' patience, they were hardy folk, and went about their work with vigour.


The attack had no warning. They burst from the overhanging canopy en mass and dove towards the camp, the sinister buzzing of their wings filling the air. Ducim recognized the creatures as the vespoids - overgrown insects whose potent venom was often fatal. Their nomadic swarms had been the death of many settlement parties.




They were upon the dwarves in an instant. One dived at Led, narrowly missing the woodcutter on her way back to the stockpile. "Everyone! Quickly! Into the mineshaft!" bellowed the overseer. The dwarves above ground ceased their labours and dove into the newly constructed tunnel, which, coupled with the screaming, scared the wits out of Kosoth and Eshtân, the miners, who were on break at the time. The dwarves sat hushed in a circle, while their animals milled about. It was far too cramped for everyone, so their was a collective sigh of relief when Adil, the newly crowned militia commander, poked her head back down from the surface to give the all-clear.

The dwarves, after a short drink, resumed their labour - most working to strip down the trees and gather provisions. Anderz had success in her hunting, netting a fat mosswine with her crossbow.




The atmosphere was jovial - most of the dwarves were still relieved to made it to their site alive, and the survival of the most recent attack without incurring any damage raised the good feelings further.



However, in the dark depths of the river, something stirred. The lagiacrus had been the unchallenged lord of the swamp for nearly a century, ever since his mother had hatched him and his nest mates here. Even as they had succumbed, both to the nigh-endless predators of the swamp, as well as the ever more frequent incursions of the nascent civilizations encroaching upon it, he had survived. Endured. He had grown old and fat, but his body still rippled with terrible muscle and smother scales like hardened steel. Now he could observe the dwarves about their labour, loudly singing as they worked, drunk ale and stripped the land of tree and plant. His small brain could not understand who they were, but he knew what they were: competitors, foolish interlopers upon his territory.




He heaved his massive bulk up onto the bank, holding the camp in his gaze. Mud and reeds still clung to his body as he began to slunk along through the mire, intent to conceal himself until the last possible moment.


Fath, the metalsmith, currently employed in gathering berries, saw him first. She could not believe her eyes - it seemed to her as if a massive portion of the river bed had been given life and was crawling towards the camp. Her eyes widened and her basket dropped from her hands as she realised what she was seeing. Her mouth hung open and twitched as she watched the great lizard creep towards the camp. Her stupor finally passed, and she let out a great scream high and long.

The lagiacrus paused in midstep and looked about, attempting to locate the source of the sound. He observed one of the little things pointing at him and screaming. A challenge! Something akin to joy passed through his brain. He raised himself up on his back legs and let out a long roar. The ground itself shook. The beast saw his opponent running hurriedly, as fast as its puny legs could carry it. He roared again, and began to charge at full speed, each great claw pounding into the ground with tremendous speed and force.


By the time Led had reached the dwarves, the great beast was already in sight, sprinting towards the camp as fast as it could. Ducim took control "Everydwarf should know the drill from last time. Go as deep as the miners have dug and pray to Armok it can't fit." Adil piped up. "Overseer, one of our number is still away from camp! Led is gathering lumber from the far forest!" Ducim cursed. She hadn't counted on this. Before she could respond, however, Anderz, captain of the marksdwarves, interjected. "You go and get Led. I won't leave a dwarf behind. I'll hold it off until you get Led in safely." With that, Anderz hoisted her crossbow on her should and ran towards the monster. It had close three quarters of the distance to the camp now, and was barreling down on them with the same ferocity. Anderz raised the crossbow to her shoulder and peered down her sights. Let's give him some good old-fashioned dwarven hospitality, she muttered.


The first spot bounced off its scales leaving nary a scratch. Anderz was unfazed, and continued her barrage as the beast grew ever closer. The dwarfs had given her no indication they had found  The next two were equally useless, but the third buried itself deep in the creatures leg. It stopped its running, rearing up on its legs and bellowing. It had not known pain in battle for many seasons. The creature's spectacle terrified Anderz further, and she fumbled to inset a new bolt into the groove of her bow. The beast's snorting was audible now, she noticed, just as the bolt slipped through her fingers and landed in the mud. She could the hate in creature's eyes now, as she pushed through mud and reed to find her final bolt. She felt pure relief when she heard Ducim's voice, telling her they had found Led. She abandoned the bolt and sprinted for the burrow, the creature hot on her tail.



The creature knew victory now. His enemies scrambled away, and he would soon slaughter them as he did all who impinged upon his territory. It ran into the camp, snapping at a fleeing water buffalo. The lagiacrus did not pursue it. It was not his prize. He strode triumphantly into the camp, sticking his great snout under piles of barrels. The beast was confused. Where could they have gone? He could see far into the distance but they were not there. Then a scent wafted up into his great nostrils. It was of fear and sweat. It emanated from a small hole within the ground. He pawed at its entrance idly. He could not fit.


He roared in fury. Inside, the dwarves felt the walls shake. They huddled together in sheer terror as it clawed the ground and bellow. The lagiacrus's fury was interrupted by the frantic pawing of the nearby water buffalo. It had not fled after all, but remained instead in its pasture for the whole ordeal. The lagiacrus immediately launched after it, the buffalo barely keeping itself out of its jaws as it fled the camp.

In a few minutes, once the dwarves were sure it was gone, they finally emerged from their burrow. They had suffered yet another assault upon their kind, and survived. Surely this was the worst the swamp can throw at us, mused Ducim as she helped move a very distraught horse out of the burrow again.

In her heart, the overseer knew she was wrong.

        Entry III: Life and Death in the Great Swamp

20th Granite, 126

Armok's beard, we've been lucky.  It's not just the vespoids we've been having to contend with - that great river monster has made another appearance. I wasn't there, but from what I've been told, Uber Pye was fetching the last of the goods from the caravan when he heard SOMETHING slaughtering a water buffalo. In one of his brighter moments, the dwarf(who possessed no armour, weapons, and had not received even basic military training) wandered off into the trees after the sound. After climbing down the hill, he was apparently treated to the sight of the beast savaging the camp's tame buffalo, killing it shortly after he arrived. Uber Pye took this as a good opportunity to begin sprinting back towards the camp, shouting at the top of his lungs.



The beast was apparently intrigued by this and opted to pursue him, arriving at the wagon shortly after Uber Pye had finished relating his story to Led. They both saw the thing and bolted directly towards the camp. This was apparently when the monster's charge was interrupted by one of our war dogs, evidently made of sterner stuff than the dwarves. From what I'm told, the creature simply picked it up by its back leg and hurled it away, tearing the limb clean off. None of us thought he would make it, but apparently legs are less important to dogs.



Anyway, besides that momentary burst of excitement, this encountered ended much the same as the last(all of us pissing ourselves in a tunnel until it went away.) Things certainly have gotten to an auspicious start.


1rst Slate, 126


Things have been fairly boring, thank Urdim. I've begun proper fort expansion, including the creation of a proper below-ground farming set-up. Until then, I've set up a temporary farm in the side of a hill, so as to prevent starvation and its ensuing complications.



2nd Slate, 126


Adil, our militia commander, came to speak with me today. She said that as we were in the middle of a river valley, with the proper placement of walls, we could create a secure and defensible location. While I privately thought that she was getting ahead of herself, given that their are still only seven of us, I commended her on the idea anyway.



20th Slate, 126


I've seen Uber Pye and Led plotting on multiple occasions over the past week. I wonder what they're up to. In any event, things are still quite stable. Our supplies, supplemented by our farming, gathering, and Anderz's hunting, are holding up well enough. We could probably get some extra food from fishing, but I don't currently have great desire to send a dwarf to her death. Excavation is progressing steadily. Uber Pye, and to a lesser extent, Eshtân, are becoming excellent miners, to the point where they could earn a good salary in the capital. Lucky for me, I don't think they will be getting back there any time soon! In less pleasant news, those damned vespoids are buzzing about again. They haven't taken any interest in us yet, and hopefully it will stay that way.


18th Galena, 126

Thanks to a little accident while I was constructing the cistern, I finally saw what those two kobold-brains were up to. They're trying to replicate the great hall of Sparkgears, here! I only found out about it because one of my miners channeled down into it while I was overseeing cistern construction. Luckily for Uber and Led, my arrogance overcame my common sense, and I allowed them to continue the hall. Let's see who's a backwater now!


In another update, there have been reports of strange beasts across the river. I went over for a look myself, and recognized them from my Tome Exploratum as genpreys. Only one had a crest. I assume it is the leader.



1rst Granite, 126

I came back from gathering berries to find the fort in total disarray. Apparently, we had been running low on booze for quite some time, yet no one had thought to tell me. In any event, I immediately commissioned the building of a still on the now-unfinished food processing level. Until everything's up and running, however, we'll have to subsist on...



Water. We'll be lucky if we last another week.




11th Granite, 126


Migrants have arrived. Somehow word must have gotten back to the capital. Or the Guild sent them anyway without any knowledge of our condition or survival. But they would never do that, would they? Anyway, I've included their profiles, so I have some information to look over if they become trouble.

I took an immediate dislike to one of them, that Asob. Despite not having a single useful skill as far as I could tell, she immediately began lecture me on the booze shortage and how that was evidence of terrible fortress organization. I changed her job from mason-in-training to fisherdwarf. Let's see how she enjoys that! In other news, Anderz is out of bolts, and the cistern is almost finished. There is a backlog of minor administrative and organizational tasks like you wouldn't believe. Such is the life of an overseer(ess!).



13th Sandstone, 126


Today is a dark day. The swamp has claimed its first dwarf. As it was due to the booze shortage I didn't avert, I can't help but feel it was my fault. Led was getting a drink from the river when she was surprised by one of the swamp's foul denizens.  The beast erupted from the forest howling and hooting. Asob later told me she'd seen a captive one in the capital in a travelling zoo. Apparently, it's called a 'congalala', for its distinctive call.



Its appearance would almost have been amusing, if it wasn't so huge and aggressive. While Led managed to escape, two other dwarves were still stuck between the beast and the camp. They were evading it for now, but when they tired, they would have a good a chance at survival as a goblin in a magma trap. I had no choice. I was forced to send in the militia. I hadn't noticed Adil's approach - She was already behind me. When I told her what must be done, she nodded grimly and started down the hill with her axe. Then, with a great cry, she charged the thing. The beast was surprisingly agile, dodging her first few blows. Still, Adil was managing to hold her own. Until, that is, the beast unleashed its deadly secret. It expelled some sort of foul gas, so noxious that it induced choking even in us, far away from the immediate battle. It laid Adil low, reducing her to a gagging mass. The beast immediately started savaging her with its claws. She was defenseless.





The attack was horrible to watch. Anderz arrived, too late - she had been hunting. She was about to charge, but I had her wait. She might be able to club a duck to death with her bow, but if Adil coudn't handle this beast, there was no way she could. The other dwarfs had been able to escape by now, and we followed them back to the camp. The creature didn't follow. Until we get alcohol production up, the beast, or 'The Empty Reed', as the dwarfs have named it, will be an ever-present danger. May Armok stop it from claiming another life.[/i]

Ok, done my turn. It was quite... :o

      Entry IV: An Uncertain Future     


Adil's death still hung upon the camp like a foul mist. Her friends had difficulty coming to terms with the sudden loss of their commander, who had, after all, died saving some of their own. All dwarves now looked upon their future with increased uncertain - surely, if Adil, the camp's most poweful warrior, could be felled, seemingly with such ease, what chance did any of them have?

Ducim, Uber Pye, and Lath, her clest friends, were the most damaged by Adil's death. Pye, in particular, hung around the meeting hall alone for days, refusing to employ his great mining prowess in the service of the fortress. Yet, all things pass in time, and the mood of the dwarves soon changed. The bubbling enthusiasm of the first few days did not return, but their morose passivity was replaced by a grim resolve. They would build this fortress, in spite- no, because of the sacrifices of dwarves like Adil and the many sure to follow her.

4th Moonstone, 126


Things have finally begun to progress normally. I suppose one just has to get on with it, even after loss. Uber Pye has broken out of his depression to ascend to a truly legendary mining ability. And, by the looks of it, Eshtân isn't too far behind him.


5th Moonstone, 126

Forget my goods words for those two miners! They are nothing but an annoyance. They continually pester me about something called 'damp stone'. I told them that I don't bloody care what kind of stone it is, it's their job to bloody MINE it, not to admire it! I was on the verge of calling them a bunch of elves, but then I saw Uber Pye's biceps and thought better of it.


7th Moonstone, 126


I've begun acting on Adil's earlier suggestion. The least I can give for her sacrifice is to honour her request, which, now that I look at it, seems pretty brilliant. We are surrounded by two large hills, and a river. I've begun fortifying them with walls, and then we can hollow them out and make them part of our fort.

Speaking of fort, there really isn't much to look at now. Only the first floor of the great hall is close to completion, and there are no rooms, beds, tables or chairs. I should probably attempt to solve that.



17th Moonstone, 126


Tragedy has struck again! Yasot Bomrektomus was on the far side of the hill, laying down the first of the walls, when something horrible attacked him. It dropped upon suddenly him from out of the sky, and from the dwarves who were there said that it was both extremely sudden and utterly terrifying. The battle was gruesome, and one-sided. The dwarves present told me that the thing was apparently breathing fire!


From their descriptions, I've identified it as a Blue Yian Kut-Ku. They are migratory, and hopefully it was just passing through - I don't think we could contend with permanent population for any length of time.



I immediately called an alert, and we waited for nearly an hour before going out to retrieve poor Bomrek's corpse. The area around him was scorched to ash. The dwarves now call the beast Tathurthatthil – Scribeatumns. I do not know why. Perhaps because its presence has etched this autumn forever into our collective consciousness.

 I only pray it does not return.



 



19th Moonstone, 126

Some traders arrived today. Given that I was obviously the only one possessing the requisite qualities for the job, I traded some crafts our craftsdwarves had whipped up in our newly-constructed workshop area. However, we did not have enough for much more than a barrel of rum. Not that there's anything wrong with a barrel of rum. It was only as they were leaving that Fath quietly reminded me that we lacked an anvil. I have a sinking feeling that this particular deficit bodes ill for us.


17th Obsidian, 126


Boredom has returned. I welcome it. A dwarf needs no more than quiet labour. I have not yet placed the amenities that we so desperately need. I have, however, designated a temporary dining room. Once all three levels of the great hall are finished, then we shall rejoice in that glorious space, undoubtedly engraved with all manner of testament to our success.




19th Obsidian, 126


We caught small thief rifling through our stockpile today. We didn't manage to catch it, but from their descriptions, it sounds like a bipedal cat. Our cats are furtive and secretive. I wonder if they are in league together.


20th Obsidian, 126


Well, as per protocol, I've served my one year. I'll hold a meeting with the more responsible dwarves soon, and attempt to foist the burden on somebody else. I suspect my journal entries will become more sporadic too, as I'm given some actual work. This is it for now!



The dwarves eked out their last days of winter in relative peace. None troubled them, and the construction of the various structures of the base continued. When the last day of winter finally arrived, most dwarves were jubilant. Spring would be here tomorrow, and they would be celebrating the anniversary of their first year with Assaultboat. Yet, it was not to be. A vile force of darkness was already upon them.

A foul pack of dark stranglers, and their war moose, and leader, Terrorhoof, had arrived. Foul, nomadic creatures, they roamed the landing preying upon the weak and unprepared. Assaultboat matched both of these descriptions. Terrorhoof mooed menacingly.



Led saw them first, as she was chopping wood. The horde was advancing steadily, whooping and screeching. She immediately ran to Ducim, who was not doing much of anything at the time. She explained the situation. Ducim nodded, taking it all in. The overseer was faced with two choices. She could either attempt to seal Assaultboat off from the world, only to emerge when the dwarves felt strong enough. Or, she could cobble together Assaultboat's 12 residents into a ramshackle, unequipped militia, and gamble everything on one battle, throwing the dwarves' lives to chance like so many dice.





Ducim Ishlumcibob chose the latter option.




The overseer gathered the dwarves for her last time as overseer. They stood in the dim light, regarding her intently, as she climbed up upon the table.

"Dwarves of Assaultboat!"

The whines and growls of the dogs, who had already met the foe, where audible from above.

"Dwarves of Assaulboat, our hour of destiny draws nigh! A foul foe assails our fort! Shall we go gently into the nigh!

"NO!" Came the unanimous reply of 12 dark, lined, faces, many bearing scars of industry and strife already.

Ducim had planned for more of a speech, but the dwarves were already streaming towards the surface.

The battle was fierce and violent. The dark stranglers were not prepared for the sudden appearance of 12 new foes, and found themselves surrounded. Terrorhoof mooed furiously at her tactical misstep. The battle quickly degenerated into a chaotic orgy of violence(a dwarf's favourite kind of orgy).

The fighting was horrifically violent.




The dark stranglers at times appeared to have the upper hand...



However, in the end, the brave dwarves of Assaultboat began to turn the odds against the fiends.







Terrorhoof saw it was hopeless. She mooed the retreat call, galloping away into the swamp, the able bodied remnants of her host following as fast as they could.



Ducim surveyed the aftermath of the battle.




They had done far better than she had hoped. They had lost but one of their number, but had driven the enemy into a total route. However, the remnants of the battle were visible on every dwarf's face. Sadness from the loss of Inul was everywhere, but many dwarves bore vicious wounds from the battle - wounds that Assaultboat, with no hospital or medical resources of any kind, would struggle to treat. She bore a grim look on her face as returned to the tunnel. What would her legacy be?

I compressed the 'region 1' save, and proceeded to upload it to DFFD.

Aye, in that little mountain by the river. It's been sufficient so far. On the lowest level you can see the the irrigation system and more plots outlined. I couldn't quite finish it before I was done.

Are you going next, or is Kingfisher? He signed up for my last fort, which never really ended per se. This one was a direct continuation
