Civilization screen.
« on: November 22, 2011, 08:32:01 pm »

I just embarked.

Should the civilization screen only display one dwarven civilization if i am in reach of other civilizations?

Or are they only added once the diplomat meets with my leader? I just want a nice area with acess to all races.

Your civ screen will update when you come into contact with them (trade, ambush, sieges, even animal civs), and will update accordingly, i.e. when you have a broker in your fort, it will show your trade agreements.

Alright, thanks! I thought the second you embark all civs show up, i was worried cause i want dwarfs and humans to trade with, elves to steal from, and goblins to fight.

You will seriously have more than you want. Always.

That's why everyone has to have the lever.
No problem :D

That one? Over there? In that control room on my habitation deck z-level where
the dwarves live?

Yes, that one labeled "Made in HFS by Necro910". :)

Don't touch it ... and for Armok's sake, don't pull it.

This is what happens when threads only last 2 posts. They lose topic.

Actually, I don't think a thread should be locked unless moderators need to be called in to break up internet-stupidity.  You never know when someone may need to add to the actual thread topic in a meaningful way.

As for the real topic, as long as the embark screen listed more than dwarves as your 'neighbors' you will get more than just the dwarven caravan.  As others stated, after embark you only see civ's in the civ screen once your fortress' citizens have encountered them.

Off-off-topic (but closer to the topic than The Lever was ;) ): is it more difficult to get a fortress running when the dwarves are the only ones sending you a caravan?  My initial thought is "no, because you'll have more stuff to sell them and be able to buy out the entire caravan", but that doesn't always help ...

It's a balance between constant supply, resupply and spending resources defending caravans... Herpetyderpderp.

Depends how you look at it then.

Should the civilization screen only display one dwarven civilization if I am in reach of other civilizations?

Are we talking about more than one entity (added to entity_default.txt) or just the extra dwarven civilizations you can view via tab before embarking? Because the latter won't visit you, you're only in contact with your home civilization.

Similarly, when another entity has several civilizations, you are only going to trade or get attacked by the nearest one.
