The Wii U is slated for some time in 2012.

I'm not really sure that should be called next gen.  It's more this gen/this gen.5

Eh. True. And it is not backwards compatible with the cube. So you might miss some good stuff.

Microsoft has something coming in two/three years, but that is most likely too long/not what you are looking for anyway.

Nintendo has been making a point of releasing "gens" on its own schedule and under its own rules, so it IS next gen, but its certainly not the xbox/ps3 "next-gen", heh.

Also, not cube compatible? Hrrr, that sucks. I wonder if you could repurchase the games as downloads though? And whether or not you could carry over your downloads from the Wii... hmmm...

So this is related but not exactly on point. However, I didn't want to start another thread (yay for use of search function).
So my parents are actually getting a gaming system. They are old and do not do gaming at all nor do they want to.

Rather, they really need an exercise and fitness program because they are very unhealthy. I don't plan to use this at all, because I don't have time/have a computer for what gaming I do....

So the question becomes, which of the major game consoles are good for exercise (above all else). I don't really think they will be into dancing games or something similar.
How about the X box? Via the Kinect.

I've seen the wii, and looked at wii fit, but the thing uses a sort of weird .... lump that looks like a scale or something. It's weird. Any good? http://www.wiifit.com/ I really don't see my dad doing yoga....

The PS3 doesn't really impress me, but who knows. Any suggestions on that possibility?

Pros and cons would be helpful too, anything really.

My parents (who are about 57) like the Wii quite a bit. In particular, my father favors golf in Wii Sports Resort (got it after all). My mother does play some of those too, as well as some odd Kinect-like device by Ubisoft that she plugs into the Wii and helps her do aerobics.

But, see, I don't understand why it's obvious. Can you help me understand that please?

From what I've seen, it's between the Wii and X box 360 with the Kinect. With the wii, you've sorta got to hold onto that little wand thing, whereas with the X box Kinect, you don't really have to do anything but move and it somehow senses this?

I also favor the Wii as a general rule (for separate gaming related reasons) to the X box, but have never compared the two for fitness reasons.

Thoughts?

XBOX+ Kinect + one game was 100 € more expensive than Wii + 2 games + 1 extra controller (besides the default one)

Also, the fitness games I've played for Kinect were pretty heavily aerobic, compared to the much more moderate Wii Fit.

1. The price difference is pretty phenomenal.
2. KINECT can be a little finicky when it comes to lighting and any movement in the background.
3. Greater variety (AFAIK) in significantly different fitness-oriented games.
4. Far less chance of the console dying on you.

Note: I'm far from a Nintendo fanboy and haven't owned one of their consoles or handhelds since the gamecube.  Between Sony consoles and my trusty PC all my bases are covered.  The Wii just happens to do the whole kiddy game / fitness thing a lot better than the other consoles.

I've used both the Wii and Kinect, and I think the Wii is much better for your (Truean's) situation.The Kinect is more designed to be a game, where the Wii is more for everyone to have something to enjoy / use it for.
The Wii Fit has a wide variety of activities, with varying levels of most; as such, most anyone can get great use out of it, and it's rather fun. However, the Kinect has - as Vector somewhat said - a generally more heavy set of activities, not necessarily something for all levels of fitness. The Kinect is also not designed as much for achieving fitness as the Wii is; or, at least, not designed as well for it.
The Wii also seems to be better at sensing motion, and you don't have to use the remote and Wii Fit board for everything. ChairmanPoo's point is a good one as well.

In short, go for the Wii; the purchase will probably be a better one than the Kinect.
(Oh, and it's definitely not all yoga.)

Wii, or buy guitar hero, rock band or band hero(this is kinda for teenage girls or someone who likes pop), for xbox,ps3. Or you can buy wii plus guitar hero for it. Has plenty of fun songs to play.
