When you finally do release the goblins into hell, won't they just run off the edges of the map if they aren't actually being attacked by demons? I know that at least invaders can escape if you release them into the caverns, so I would assume that any map edge would work just as well. So though you could use goblins to deal with the initial wave of demons, after that they would all just run away leaving your hell deserted.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

If they manage to run away, that means all of the demons have been killed. Otherwise no problem, other than finding an army of legendary gobbos in hell in adventure mode :P

It's been a while since I last breached hell, but isn't it a bit of a fall from the candy spire to the floor of hell? I can see using a goblin army to fight against the initial load of demons coming out when you breach the spire. But sending them down into hell will require building a stairway down inside the spire, won't it?

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I'm a little late I guess, but I know from watching two goblins wailing on one of my creatures that they can, in fact, train.  For background, I made a fluffball creature a while ago that is completely invincible.  Naturally, one of them was attacked during a siege.  Two goblin pikemen ganged up on it.  Two months later, they were both goblin pikemasters, and were still attacking the fluffball.

I'm going to try confirm this with pics soon ^_^!

Wow. I know Scamps is considered a megabeast, but your cat is pretty impressive too, just scratching a goblin sends the goblin flying into a wall.

2 Cats and 1 Kitten, all 3 drew blood, but what surprised me the most was the kitten, even going as so far as to actually chase the goblin away before punching it into a wall. I believe there's a thread somewhere of a kitten punching a bronze collosus off a cliff....

Anyways, all of the cats are dead, and I think I'm going to let that goblin rest a while before I subject her to more testing.

I still have a lot more goblins though ^_^
Shame no more cats :d

!!Splendid Idea!!

One of my jewelers just got possessed and made jade door...

Goblins and demons running out of a jade portal to do battle......
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ha ha, race ya to raising the goblin army! (Mine I think, is going to stay in my fortress for the most part :3)

If the dwarfs in Moria were anything like the dwarfs from DF, no wonder that place got infested.

Not only can they train, but it used to be common for trap-hallways to unintentionally train goblin invaders to godly dodging, shield, weapon skill if they got lucky or if the components of the trap were insufficiently lethal.
I still remember a certain trap hallway filled with green glass axe blades... what a surprise it was when a group of goblins in decent armor walked in...

Hmm...you can't danger-room your own troops using weapon traps, but it might be easy to danger-room goblins that way. I think no-quality mechanism trap weapons probably have much less chance to hit than the upright traps used in traditional danger rooms, so they'd be more goblin-friendly, less likely to debilitate.

I suspect training happens per attack dodged/blocked, regardless of quality, so the high quantity of really, really bad attacks should be great for their dodging/blocking skills.

Of course, you'll still need to give them animal sacrifices in order to get weapon skill up.
