Quite beautiful. Most certainly a river, but instead of calling it a "river" I'd call it an ice factory, assuming it ever does thaw.

Alas, prospector tells me there is 0 ore on the entire map. :(

As I recall, there's a way to regen the same world with different stone layers, isn't there?

Well, surviving on such a map would certainly be a challenge.

I think you can run it with a different history? But I think the major seed determines ore type, and that changes the world.

Blast.

There is still hope, however. This river (namely 'Babyseize') has a LOT of sites along its northern extremities that are full of very high Z-level disparities which I'm assuming are cliffs. I see some shallow metal on a number of them, so I'm going to try embarking on a few different sites to see if any are similar and have metal of at least one or two varieties.

Well, I have found a number of freaking AWESOME sites along this river so far. One has a huuuge abundance of magnetite but no flux, one that I just genned has tons of cassiterite, galena, and marble but no natural iron (goblinite would work), plus an abundance of river-dwelling creatures including platypus-men/women and alligators (said map started out thawed). All of these maps have huge vertical cliffs, which seem to be a feature specific to The Great River 'Babyseize'. Babyseize is also chock-effing-full of waterfalls created by smaller rivers cascading into its canyon.

For your convenience, here are the worldgen parameters, so you can explore and find sites of your own. I'm going to keep looking to see if I can grab one that has iron + flux + other metals, and if not I'll probably go back to the one I just explored with the alligators (for breeding purposes, naturally). I've been going with The Hatchet of Reverence as my civ, since it has a pretty good amount of materials available for selection.

I think I'm going to rename this topic to reflect the fact that it's now about a really freaking awesome river.

Also, here's a picture of the general area of Babyseize I've been checking out:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As you can see, Babyseize is characterized by huge cliffs. It's like this for pretty much its entire length in this region, as far as I can tell, so I'm assuming it's the DF equivalent of the Grand Canyon. If you want to look for a cool embark site, the best way to do it is just to look for a point of flat land (aka 1's and 0's) jutting out into those sheer cliffs. Babyseize is also pretty much surrounded by woodland, so finding an initial source for your logging industry should be pretty easy on most of the embark sites.

Edit: Just copy/pasted this post to the OT post.

I'll post any particularly cool sites I find.

I was going to take some screenshots of embark sites with Overseer, but unfortunately it keeps crashing.

Okay, scratch that: I got overseer working. Here's the first screenshot of one 5x5 embark site. There are so many of these kinds of sites that I could take pictures all day (and intend to take several more in fact, just for fun and for the sake of the topic). This isn't even the most epic site I've found yet; it's just the one I got working first.

And here is the site with the alligators, waterfall, marble, cassiterite, and galena that I mentioned earlier. I'm thinking I might actually go with this one, just because iron can be found in abundance via goblinite and this site is just so effing COOL:

Where is that site? I found the one in the OP, but I'm not sure it's the same...

I'm generating the world now, but I have to ask, Lord Dullard, did you allow the history to run all the way to 1050? I only ask because
a) it's taking forever
b) it could affect the erosion of the canyon

Well, let's say my attempts aren't going so well.

First attempt - no anvils, but that didn't matter, as everyone died of alligator.  No-one jumped off the 20 z-level high cliff into the river, unfortunately.

Second attempt (reclaim) seemed okay, and I had anvils for some reason.  All was okay until I noticed a lack of ore.  Any ore.  DFprospector shows the most common thing was opal and DFreveal shows NO ORE anywhere.

I'm genning it again with the mineral scarcity cranked way down, and will see what happens.

Thanks for the post and the seed too.

*snaps* Mineral scarcity, of course! I forgot you could mod that. Do you still form a perfect canyon?
