I think we'll go with interceptors for now. The bombers and multi-roles are crappy at the start. BTW, if there are more story encounters that launch fighters after you, it should help to add to your defense for now.

Trade some modules for hangers, get maintenance. Definitely go interceptors until better multirole is available. Anti-air gun, yes, but only until we can get a dedicated carrier ship and drown their fighters in mooks.

I say go for a pair of hangers and fill them with inteceptors.
Maybe later when we're using more valuable fighters we could shove in a maintainance module.
Also antiair weapons; could we shove one on a destroyer replacing a smaller somewhat less useful weapon?
Edit: I'm not certain about your ability to move modules around, but it seems like theres enough space for a maintenance module if you could engauge a bit of jiggery pokery and move everything around, maybe we could remove temparorily something less useful for big battles, like cargo space or something, then shove it back in when we've defeated the pirates?

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

@ MarcAFK: The only anti-air weapon we have right now is a small-mount, and our destroyer has two built-in, cannot-be-traded-out small missile launchers. Besides, our cruiser has the best anti-air skill of all our ships.

At least 1 AA for your cruisers, since they have an advantage with that, and load them both up with 2 hangars per-Cruiser to maximize on available fighters for now. Much better hangars should take their place eventually. I shouldn't worry about maintainence, as long as you have a good maintainence crewman assigned. It takes too long to replace them for now, and not as high a priority; which is where the AA guns should take place between volleys.

This, interceptors will serve us well for now until we can start fielding real fighters later on. Who was our maintenance team again?

Karlo (22 skill) and Roubis (skill 17). Roubis also has a special skill that helps boost maintenance efforts.

I think that anti air gun should be placed and two hangers without maintenance modules as the maintenance team is good enough already.
