List/chart of creatures that are hostile to each other?
« on: October 16, 2011, 04:39:10 pm »

Is there a list anywhere of what creatures are hostile to each other?  Want to get some creature-based traps/gladiator arenas going but want to make sure my "participants" will actually fight.  I know gobbos will attack pretty much anything, but I've been told humans and elves will only attack each other/gobbos f they're at war.  Any way to see this or make them fight?

Right now I'm currently using an "Oh, sh*t" button that seals off my fort and releases a caged minotaur in case there are too many gobbos incoming for me to handle, but I want to expand this a little.  Will, for instance, gobbos/semi-megas fight HFS?  Been planning a way to hold them off while I mine out all the "cotton candy" on one fort to pick up with an adventurer and move to another spot (having heard that this is possible, not sure myself though).  I'd imagine I could release 500 or so caged gobbos and their friends in a room to keep them busy while my legendary siege operators gatling ballista/catapult them to pieces, but will they also fight smbs/mbs,or are they all classified as the same creature class?

One last thing, is it possible for gobbos/mbs to gain experience and level up? Like, for instance, could I build a massive danger room with upright wooden training spears to make me some legendary+5 spear goblins to use against my enemies?  Pretty much looking for anything I can use to weaponize my prisoners =p

This is an amazing idea!  I do believe goblins and their ilk will 'level up', as I recall reading about someone who made a torture room, with whip traps that killed prisoners so slowly they actually learned skills.

When I get a bit more confident with the game I may have to use this idea,  capture every living creature that sets foot on my land and force it into a massive army,  training them all up with danger rooms.  (hell, why not send thousands of boars and camels in there too, working as a living shield)

Animals, I've found, tend not to do so well in danger rooms... forgot to make the door to the one I tried out pet-exclusive and almost had a tantrum spiral when I sent an 8-man militia squad in and all their  pets and war dogs followed... even wooden training spears killed the dogs almost instantly, splattered a duck allover the wall, and surprisingly, crushed the chests and heads of two puppies who managed to make a full recovery.  The little ones bounce back.

I'm thinking megabeasts, though.  If they can survive it, imagine breeding up and army of tame Rocs (Only take 20 years to mature as opposed to 1,000 for dragons), getting them up to legendary, and releasing them to go claim the world for Armok?  1,000 meat shield goblins down the hole to soften them up then a shock force of 40 trained Rocs = HFS colonized.  =P

Hm... Just skimming the raws here, but it looks like it's generally broken up into sentients, predators, and grazers. I believe the predators will try to eat almost anything, most grazers will try to run from everything, and most sentients will try to burn everything to the ground.

Actually, wild predators and wild grazers seem to ignore each other.

Indeed. A fort of mine fell when the raindeer and wolves attacked side by side my first 14 dwarves.
Apperently, nature itself will unify when it locates a dwarven stronghold.

Of course. The elves aren't the only ones who get pissed off when you clear-cut a forest.

Lol, I've just been doing some digging (punpunPUN!), and it looks like if you capture a male and female, [PET_EXOTIC] megabeast and change it to [PET], they can breed if you set the female's [MAX_CHILDREN] above zero... AND they can gain skill if you set them to CAN_LEARN.  Dragon/Roc danger room for fun and profit anyone?  Let 'em eat some gobbos for legendary titles then drop 'em in with the clowns.  EPIC engravings!

Nah.

Cue Ents swarming in and flinging dwarves into orbit.

Anyway, I think it works as following:

Wild animals:

Do not attack elves.
Carnivores will attack lone dwarves/humans or tame animals, but not wild animals. They will usually avoid groups.
Unless cornered or attacked, herbivores will avoid dwarves or other animals, tame or otherwise.

Sentient, non-civs (blind cave ogres, troglodytes, animal men):
Will attack dwarves or tame animals that come within visual range. Will ignore wild animals and dwarves or tame animals that are not within visual range.

Sentient civs:
Thieves will ignore each other and be ignored though they will fight whatever discovers them if they cannot escape. A kobold thief can coexist with goblins if you pit them with each other.
Invaders actively seek out dwarves to attack and will move towards them. They will attack anything that gets in their path. Raiding parties will skirmish if they blunder into each other. Sieges will fight each other as well.

Megabeasts:
Attack anything that is not another megabeast. I think they ignore wild animals as well, but my megabeasts always spawn away from any herds onscreen.

Demons:
Attack anything that is not a demon.

unless there civs at war with each other...in which case the thieves will be caught and fight any enemy nation. seems (from the twice i have seen this) that ambush/siege forces preference proximity to any particular enemy nationality. three way melee's are fun.

i've also only seen civ ambush/ siege parties fight if there at war, if there not then they are happy to mingle and rush in in one large horde.
