(At the same time, to follow up the above, it is tempting to overcompensate for the original disparity and consider each and every individual's death as utterly inconsequential.  One wonders what happens at the point where more than a million individuals have been disregarded (cumulatively, by any number of socially conscious observers) as a reaction against their decision to honour the same million 'victims en mass'.  Who, then, is the disregarded majority and the over-attended minority?  Not that this is particularly relevant, and though not intended in bad taste I concede it may appear so.  Also, it is probably a statistically unlikely situation, for the most part.  Consider it a thought experiment, only.)

I never concede to that. My awareness of every dying thing makes my moral compass superior, and everyone mourning anyone they did not know personally over another they did not know personally just because one was in the media and the other wasn't is a fucking hypocrite and a slave to irrational and harmful emotion. People don't usually like it when I call them that. Probably because it's true. ;)

I'm only half serious here, btw. It's a rant.

It certainly makes you less hypocritical then the vast majority of people who's sole contribution to change is to feel bad for a couple minutes.

You honestly consider someone who does nothing to help morally reprehensible compared to another person who does nothing, but feels really really bad about the starving children?

I wouldn't say "morally reprehensible" but ever so slightly worse, yes. Feeling bad is better than not, even if nothing productive comes of it.

Both people are ultimately doing nothing, so the distinction doesn't matter that much. It's still better to have empathy for those outside your monkey sphere than not, is all.

Feeling bad over something I can neither change nor affect is unhealthy and just causes me to feel bad.
