I never even thought of the iPad as a "tablet PC". (nevermind that at most, it's a "tablet Mac") It's kind of a glorified personal organizer. An iPhone without the phone, if you will.

So is a keyboard... and, ironically, I'm typing this on my WM6 smartphone's virtual keyboard. With a stylus. So, yeah.

I'm still pro-keyboard though, since said smartphone does have a hardware keyboard. I just feel too lazy to flip it out.
And it supports USB-hosting, so if I wasn't so lazy, I could be using a mouse with it. I love my phone!

More on topic, I think if the alleged tablet PC's actually worked as tablets (i.e. a Cintiq-ish device with all hardware built in) they'd see much more use.

I want to see a universal active digitizer for capacitive screens.  How hard would it be to take something like the Adonis Jot Stylus and make it a bluetooth or usb device with a pressure sensor in the tip of the pen?  This would be incredibly valuable to me, and I'm surprised nobody's done it.  It's taken years just for someone to make a pinpoint accurate capacitive stylus, when it's something that so many people want.  The Adonis people only wanted $2,500 on Kickstarter to fund development of one, and they got $168,500!!!!

I have a friend who is an electronics engineer, and doesn't think it would be too hard to design.

What I want is a sort of a mini-GPS stylus set that consists of four transceivers that can be attached to any flat surface, and a stylus that reads position data from these transceivers. It'd work with flat areas of variable size, as long as a properly proportioned calibrating grid is used, and also on any monitors, instantly turning any surface into a tablet and any monitor into a Cintiq analogue.

I guess the viability of this idea depends on whether it's actually possible to read position data precisely and quickly enough on such a small scale.

I think there are easier ways to go about this.  I know of three different technologies that are simpler, and each somewhat close but not quite what you're describing.

The Inkling is somewhat close to the idea I'm describing, except it's also a real pen. And it stores the sketches instead of acting as a tablet. Up the resolution and add more transceivers to allow larger surfaces or interference-prone areas like monitors, and you've got my idea. Using infrared and ultrasound is actually kinda cool, it really would allow extra precision. And with four receivers instead of just one, you eliminate most of the problems Inkling has with handedness and keeping a line of sight to the pen. Inkling is $200, so this kind of technology isn't too costly. The version I describe could cost around $800, but I'd buy it even if it cost a thousand.

Except Wacom will never develop it. They have no reason to create a cheaper, more mobile version of their flagship Intuos and Cintiq brands (especially Cintiq), even if it'd lack the peripheral bonuses (i.e. control buttons and dials). Maybe I should pitch the idea to someone at Genius...

When I look at some of my friends, I see some 'dangers' with those devices, nevertheless: They spend a considerable amount of time in downloading and trying out hundreds of apps, without really have a need for them / those apps do not provide any value. So, they waste their time. But sure, that is everybody's own decision how to spend his spare time...

Of course we also have the "oh apps are just simplified PC programs" and what i'd imagine, back in the day "PC programs are just simplified arcade games!"

I think he means more that they buy, install, play for a few minutes, delete, buy, install, play for a few minutes, delete...
