fill in a ditch or bowl with dirt?
« on: September 28, 2011, 10:09:12 am »

Is there any way to fill in an outdoor Z-layer so that grass grows on the next higher layer? I know I can build walls to level terrain, but I don't think I can muddy the walltops to make the layer above it fertile.

Right now I've got a pretty sweet spot inside a mountain that's between a surface magma pipe and a brook, and once I finish my moat I'd like to use the largest fairly flat outdoor area for milking pens and pastures. But it's got a shallow depression in it, so it's a bit hard to manage.

You can see the beginnings of the moat and the bowl-shaped area I'm talking about here:

I know there's nothing technically wrong with designating a few different pastures on a few different Z-levels. But a) that's the easy way out, b) it offends my STACHENBLOCHEN !! instincts, and c) I'll bet someone smarter than me has already figured this out.

Fake Edit: the smart thing to do would be just dig it all down to Z=-2, rather than trying to fill up to Z=0, because that would leave dirt and grass will eventually re-grow. But again: TOO EASY. NOT DWARFY.

I don't know of any way to accomplish what you are trying to do other than by the workarounds that you suggest unfortunately. If you were underground then it would be a simple matter of muddying your walls, but since your aboveground I don't really think that there is much that can be done to help.

Bollocks. Guess I'll have to dig it out.

If I end up digging out layers of stone instead of soil, will grass eventually spread over and grow on the Z-layer above the newly-exposed stone? If so, does it make a difference if I channel it rather than tunneling it?

I wish we could fill pits or ditches with dirt. However, you could always make it a pit and fill it with goblins!

Hmm, can constructed floors be muddied?

Yes, but nothing will grow on them.

There is no "small ditch" problem that can't be fixed with a proper ridiculous amount of magma.

Just do that than add water and BAM fertile ground.

PS. has a lot of potential for Fun too.

So if that bowl were to be filled with magma, and then cooled to obsidian by water, I could use yet more water to muddy the tops of the new obsidian surface and grass would grow on it? This applies to aboveground tiles, right?

Sorry to be dense, it's just that I've never experimented with that before.

I did it once and I THINK there was fertile ground there. The bad part was the fact that it was just mud with lots of shrubs growing on it. No grass. That might have changed though.

EDIT: If you have free access to magma you might want to just make an isolated test on a 3x3 square to see if grass grows there and decide than.

I haven't tried it, but in another thread a couple of people said that the grass was covered in mud, and so appeared brown. If you look at the tile there will be grass listed.

In the end, the color of the grass doesn't matter; what's important is whether or not pasture animals can graze it. When I get the moat finished and metal production going, I'll have good access to water and magma in that area. So I can do a small test and report back.

non-updating Update: I had my first Fun ever! Yay!

But it wasn't with magma. Boo!

Even before I got to that point, I was hit with a flood of 42 immigrants in two waves (previous waves were 7-10). I read up on what governs migration wave size, and realized that with the warm, friendly setting and quick riches (strange mood got me a legendary stonecrafter right away), I'd brought it on myself.

To deal with this, and to figure out the new DF2010 channeling behavior (since I was used to 40d) I thought I'd make my fort seem less desirable by giving several peasant miners rather challenging (i.e., Fun) assignments with getting rid of floating ramps I'd somehow created in the moat.

Unfortunately, one of them survived, went to the hospital, and proceeded to become miserably thirsty. By the time she went berserk, there were a few other unlucky invalids in the hospital, as well as my Chief Medical Dwarf, all of whom turned out to be quite squishy.

If any of you are wondering, I do not recommend that an unarmed Fortress Guard consisting of 3 married women try to take on an enraged miner wielding an iron pick. It's... fun, in a tantrum-spiraly way. It would be smarter to just have some spare buckets, or dig a well near the hospital.

Fortunately I have an embark save of this map backed up against just such an instance of poor planning.
