I'm sure Toady just chose it for the way it sounds and didn't realize it meant something else, most likely in some sort of hipster underground gay venue of in-speech. (Who else really needs a slang word for that?)

To me, the word sounds like a disgruntled, crushing Grendel or something. Fitting. (A Crush-bundle!)

Also as someone else pointed out, "The Querns is an area of Cirencester [...] the name 'Querns' is a direct descendant of the Anglo-Saxon word 'Crundles', meaning a Quarry, albeit a very distorted version."

Notably they are underground creatures and quite possibly Toady came across the word one time and unconsciously associated it with rocky caverns, etc.

I've always imagined crundles (in game) to be rather like a horseshoe crab in shape, perhaps with a bit more centipede in there as well, with a thick layer of clawed mandibles on their mouth that they use to sort of scrape and claw at what they're eating, turning it into a stringy paste so it's easier to digest.  It would make sense that these mandibles would also be used to eat or turn stone, grazing moss and bacteria off them, giving them the impression of a quern as they juggle rocks in their clawed maw.
