Need a new sandbox/open-ended game
« on: September 23, 2011, 02:36:08 pm »

Hi guys, I'm desperately searching for a new game. I like them open-ended and sandboxes. My favorite kind are Simulation/RPG/Business Sim. I'm pretty sure I've tried all the famous one you'll have to offer so please dig deep!

Just for examples, here are some games I loved :

-The Guild
-Mount&Blade
-X series
-Sim City 4
-Unreal world
-Anno
-Minecraft

I like building, crafting, buying, upgrading, trading,...

Thanks a lot, I know you won't disappoint me, I've been reading this forum for a long time now and always found great unknown games!

PS:Sorry for my possibly weird english, I'm french  :P

Hmmm....

Try Aurora. It's always on the first page here, so you may have already tried it.

Also, you can spell weird. I never can spell weird correct (Unless I use spellcheck), and I'm American  :P

Terarria
Space Rangers 2 (If I remember right)
Wurm Online
Children of the Nile

Those four are what I can remember off hand that's not on your list.

It felt a bit like a movie in which two stoners try to steal a military helicopter

OpenTTD, its a free open source game based on transport tycoon, and its likely the best transport-business simulation in existence.
You could also try the settlers if you want something like Anno, as its very similar [Theres tons of settlers games], i think majesty 2 is in this vein as well.
You could try terraria if you like minecraft.. Its sorta the same idea, but 2d. And kael[df community] runs a server at the moment.
You might consider Theme hospital, a old game but theres a open source front end for it, so if you find a original copy/abandonware then use the open source frontend [corsix-th is the name] it works pretty well.
You could also try the elder scrolls series.
Um.. also the stalker series arnt exactly what i would call sandbox, but they feel pretty big and open, and have something-almost-like-crafting.

Seconding aurora. If you can wrap your brain around DF, it's just a few more inches to wrap it around Aurora. Once it's all wrapped though... oh my. Say goodbye to your wife/gf/husband/bf/pet/kids/life, it's gonna suck you in.

It's not sandbox exactly, but it does appeal to the same sort of people, in my experience: Civ III.

Or you could fuck around with Conway's Game of Life for a while. There's a lot of simulators that will allow you to play with your own rules, too.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Well, to be honnest I played DF only for like 20hours, I can't really get into it, and I'm pretty sure it would be the same with Aurora. Shame on me tho, they look great but sadly I need graphics to enjoy a game  :-X
Don't know about Conway's Game of Life, thanks, gonna check it out!

I don't think it is a game. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it is not a true game. You plug in some numbers, and watch the cells reproduce and die.

The interesting thing about Conway's Game of Life are the underlying rules and the interesting patterns that develop. It is not something you'd be interested in if you like graphics or aren't interested in esoterica.

I'm sure that's very interesting and all, but I don't think I'd enjoy it  ;D

Best I can suggest are Majesty 1 and 2 and Dungeon Keeper 2.

Loved dungeon keeper 2, heard about majesty but I'm not that into STR anymore, except for an occasional game of SCII.
I like games in which a single game lasts dozens of hours...
