I need some advice, Whovians!

I could go on for a while about science fiction and social gravity, but I'll get right to the point.

I want to know what all the hype about Dr. Who is about, but I don't know to begin. What incarnation/series/actor/episode/whatever would you suggest watching first? I know there's like 13 different TV shows of him, and some will probably be better or worse than others. What would you suggest a complete noob to the franchise watch, and where?

Time travel. Punching Hitler in the face.

Need I say more?

Also, I'd suggest watching the new series from the start because in the later seasons with RTD they just cannot shut up about Rose.

'The new series'? Remember that I know next to nothing about this.

Personally, I started watching as a kid with the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker, the guy with the curly red hair and scarf). So that's where I'd suggest. I've only caught bits and pieces of the newer series, but of those I liked the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) the most.

WELL, the hype is because

-There is a guy
-He is not a human guy
-He travels space and time
-While providing comic relief
-And drama
-He travels in a small blue box that is larger on the inside
-And fights evil aliens
-And 99% of the time things go wrong
-He has companions
-99% of these companions are beautiful ladies
-At least in the new series they are
-And they solve the universe's problems with him
-Also, David Tennant

I would suggest starting with the new series, because that's how I started, but many of the older episodes are just as good! Especially the Fourth Doctor.

-99% of these companions are beautiful ladies
The other 1% are Captain Jack. Harharhar.

I only watched one episode and it was full of farting aliens.  It didn't appeal to me.

You just had to get one with the Slitheen didn't you. Yeah I can see how that'd be off-putting.

The funny thing is that Tennant was the worst of the last three doctors. Eccleston is pretty up there but was brought down by perpetually bad scripts in that season, which Tennant also suffered from. Matt Smith is hitting a happy medium between a good actor and good scripts.

There are some really good episodes that I'm sure people would be more than happy to list.  Recently there's been a string of not so great episodes though.

And here we are assembled, in remembrance of Duke 2.0, who got ripped to shreds by rabid fangirls.

Rest in pieces man. Rest in pieces.

The Five Doctors. 'nuff said. Got watch it.

I dunno, I really liked Tennant. Didn't think he was good at being sad or dramatic though. Sort of like the main guy in Lie to Me, only less obnoxious.

Alternately, fangirl mode:

"omg tennant wuz amazang 1!!!!11! xoxo" *rips Duke 2.0 into shreds*

I really like Matt Smith, though, too. And his companions.
