Games with Factions
« on: September 20, 2011, 08:30:28 pm »

I'm looking for a game with joinable factions where you can play a part as the member and combat other factions. Please exclude S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Bethesda Games.

M&B seems a likely candidate within the very vague parameters you've set forth.

You should have gotten it during the steam sale, silly.

This, if you were gonna get it.

M&B gets all its longevity from mods, by the way. So do be prepared for that if you play it.

World of Tanks (You dont really fight a specific faction, but it has American, Russian, and German tanks. Kill em all!) - worldoftanks.com

Dota/LoL/HoN (MOBA games; pick a side (sentinel/scourge) and a hero {between 50-103ish heroes depending on what game} and duke it out in an arena) - playdota.com / leagueoflegends.com / heroesofnewerth.com

Europa Universalis (Sort of, its a grand strategy game, so everything is a faction) - europauniversalis3.com

Subvein (Rebels vs Scientists vs Mercenaries. Multiplayer Grand Theft Auto, if I had to use a few words to describe it) - subvein.com

All nicely named websites, amiright?

Mount & Blade totally.

Look into the Floris mod for it too though you might want to experience vanilla first.

there's also EU3 and the entire Total War series.

Far Cry 2 has you working for two different factions, but you don't swear loyalty to either of them and you're used as a deniable asset, so no one actually helps you.

I don't think these have been mentioned yet:
  • Saints Row 2 -- sort of like GTA, just crazier. You eventually grow your gang into a very powerful faction while fighting other gangs / entities for control and, well, hilarity.
  • A.I.M. 2: Clan Wars -- a game of combat gliders where you can build a faction to dominate each zone. Fun if you like vehicle combat.
  • S.P.A.Z.: Space Pirates and Zombies -- and indie game that sees you as with a small flotilla of ships fighting against a police state and/or civilians plus zombies. Top-down shooter with a campaign map and faction rep.
  • Hearts of Iron II / III -- Grand strategy in WW2. Can be played ahistorically.
I can think of many more, just not sure what genre or style you're looking for. Oh, and welcome to Bay12.

Certainly M&B, although I would probably recommend buying Warband, as it made several improvements.

Also, welcome to Bay12.  :)

Europa Univeralis 3: Only play if you're going to download and play the Magna Mundi mod (google it!). If you're looking for factions, well, there's a metric poopload of factions.

It's hard to summarise what's great about the mod, but since you want factions... The three strongest factions are always represented in your country, and will make various demands and/or they will voice their displeasure if you fail to please them. If you make all the factions unhappy, there'll probably be civil war. Cool thing though, if you lose the civil war, the rebels will install a new government! You then have to fight off the remainders of the old guard as the new government.

There are also factions that arise when you begin settling/subjugating other continents. The Holy Roman Empire is also represented, so beware if you declare war on any states that belong to it. They'll curb stomp you... :D

Truly, EU3 is only good for playing Magna Mundi. I guess you could wait until the stand-alone game is released next year, but... it's coming out next year. :(
