At war with nonexistant civilization
« on: September 20, 2011, 11:26:43 am »

at the embark location selection screen DF told me we were at war with the Elfs, but once we actually got to the site the (c)ivilization screen knows not of any non dwarven civilizations, it's been 2 years and i have only encountered dwarves. What is going on and how do i fix it?

You only know about a civ if you've seen them.  Wait for an ambush.

Your site seems to be inaccessible to any races that are not Dwarves, resulting in, essentially, nobody coming over to trade or any invaders. To fix that, you'd have to reembark somewhere that's not surrounded by mountains, on an island, and in general proximity of some civs. Other than that, what Girlinhat wrote above.

No, if it shows them on the neighbors part of the embark site finder, then it means there's access.  To test: I made a pocket world with mountains in the corner surrounded by ocean, cut off from the rest of the world.  At the mountain island, it shows dwarf neighbors.  On the mainland, it shows all neighbors.  I'm not sure how the dwarves crossed the ocean though, because I'm still getting trade...

Or an invasion of 50 unicorn bow cavalry, who aren't spotted until they reach your dining hall.

I think a civilization is destroyed while at war, it remains at war indefinitely. It's possible your dwarves wiped them out.

You always get dwarves, as long as they are living, regardless of how crazy your embark is.

Yes, no matter what, dwarves will trade/migrate to your fortress, UNLESS somehow you managed to spawn an island where all the edges of the playing map are water.

However, if the dwarven civ is dead, you only get the first wave of migrants, IIRC, and no traders ever. Then you are on your own.

However, you may not be large enough for the elves to attack you. They may be passing you over. You will probably get ambushed soon by them.

He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

ISSUE RESOLVED! AFTER 2-3 YEARS THEY FINALLY SENT AN AMBUSH...

I ended up losing a few dwarves, but now I'm more motivated to increase my defenses :D
