Made an interesting discovery about the Clowns
« on: September 15, 2011, 08:44:13 am »

I set up a series of hatches (microcline if it's of any interest) up the candy spire i was digging into to slow down the Clown Car visit (I knew the "fatal" depth and tapped it deliberately).  Anywho, i discovered that they cant seem to actually attack upwards.  I'd hoped the hatches would slow them down long enough for them all to bunch up right where i wanted them for a nice trap I'd prepared.  Instead they just sat staring up at the first hatch and scratching their heads.  I left them sitting staring up at the locked hatch for a good minute or so to be sure they weren't just taking a strangely long time to break it.  Anyone else seen this happen?

This sounds like the problem of "Building Destroyers can't destroy anything on a different Z-Level." It's pretty common and not at all difficult to use to your advantage.

Sounds like you've got a nice bullseye for a 20-z thick spear of solid earth right there.

It's only four-z, but it drops magma and triggers the release of water down into the impact site.

Are they bunched up by it now? You could just unlock it and continue with your original plans.

Why don't you just cave-in over the hatch with clowns, sitting under it =)?

Unfortunately, the pillar's over the upper third of the spire level in the magma (I had a nice little impact room prepared, but they tend to dig through the doors before i'm ready for them.  And the level above's a difficult fix as it's full of magma).  I might see if i can dig and build an extra row or two south of it for a bigger impact.

Actually, i think I'm gonna drain and rebuild my project a little.  Make a nice tower they have to climb up into that's the diameter of the pillar with microcline hatches (and of course, no stairs).  Let them all cluster in and MAYBE deal with more than half of them in one shot.

I once set Spoiler Monster number to 500 and then built The Hammer to destroy them.

At the top of the map (Z=230, mountains) was a hole that extended all the way down to the Candy tube.  On top of this was the Hammer, which was a 20 z-level high, 30x30 excavated granite mass.

This fit into the Anvil, which was built atop the tube right under the caverns - the Anvil was a 3 layer area full of bait animals and cheap bait furnature and doors to try to mass the Spoiler Monsters in there.  Everything was constructed, floors, walls, everything so as to not leave any survivable voids when it collapsed.  There was a smaller cave-in plug to prevent the Spoiler Monsters from entering the main mineworks.  This was at Z=10.

The shaft downwards was exactly 30x30 below Z=220.

At Z=30-37 there was a 70x70xZ=7 cistern with a constructed floor full of water.  At Z=220-227 there was one of magma to encase any possible survivors in obsidian.

500 Spoiler Monsters spawned, and (slowly, at 1 frame per 2 seconds) massed inside the Anvil.

When a significant number of them, probably 470 or 480 (the unit list was FUN) I had a dwarf pull the lever to drop the "hammer".  It was supported by a constructed wall extending out below it with a support rigged to collapse built atop the wall and the hammer atop that.

The hammer dropped.  Literally.  3 minutes later (framerate?  what's that?) it landed.

Spoiler Monster paste.  It took almost an hour for my framerate to improve due to the liquids from the cisterns sealing the Hammer.

It was epic.  One dwarf died in the making of this moment of epic, because he was stupid and standing on top of the Anvil idle.

Just a quick question before i start building as i can't remember - how are stairs  (up/down ones in particular) affected by cave-ins?  Are they deconstructed or do they remain in place like walls?
