Just found this, and posting to follow. Well done! You've certainly got the feel down. Wondering if we're going to see more minor characters from the series become PCs... and whether Neville is actually dead. Might be interesting to see how that works.

That was something that always bothered me about Harry Potter- I can see the pureblood wizards not thinking of mundane solutions to their problems, but the Muggleborn should really be more up on all that. Magic doesn't stop bullets, and you can shoot faster than you can swish and flick!

I always treated it like the "Why doesn't Buffy face up against demons with guns?" thing. It just isn't part of the setting.

It's been a long time, but didn't she blow up a demon with a rocket launcher? Your right though, it's kind of a convention in lots of modern fantasy that no one ever thinks "man, a gun would be really helpful right now".

Isn't modern technology all handwaved away in most of those settings though? Like I thought Hogwarts had an Arcanum thing going on, where the magical aura canceled out technology, something like that anyway.

I thought it only stopped electronics (which is a scary thought, since it'd have to mess with how metals accepted electrons). But, if for some reason gunpowder doesn't work, then use some sort of wizardly alternative. From the novels it seems like Alchemy will produce an explosion 9 times out of 10 if you don't follow instructions.

Or just don't fire the gun in Hogwarts. That would work too.

You've got a direct line to the Prime Ministers office, you'd think a combination of divination magic and surgical airstrikes would clear up your problems, hey?

I'd accept that... but really what IS technology when you think about it?

They may be magical but even then they still do rely on many examples of technology.

Also Old Cameras work (mechanical ones). He didn't enchant the camera if you forgot, he used a magic solution to turn normal photos into moving ones. Plus don't forget that a modern combustion engine worked (car engine) as well.

So yeah only electronics it seems. Likely there for security reasons (ok... I actually think it is there so students won't use electronics. Basically a magical "block" on fun. I hold NO illusion that Hogwarts isn't as great of a school as the books make it seem, it is relatively crummy. Heck some of the things the Ministry of magic tried to do... actually makes sense, like firing incompetents)

This is one of the two settings where people fawn about how they would love to be part of the group (assuming nothing bad happened) where I honestly believe I'd be miserable. The Other is Fairytale (Heck I am sure they wouldn't even like me :P).

But Hogwarts has plenty of opportunities for Fun, there's the tree that will kill you, and the snake that'll kill you, and  a giant three headed dog that will kill you, and a giant spider that will kill you...

Oh, you meant the other type of fun.

Don't forget that it has a large dangerous woods filled with monsters that you have to travel in if your in detention. At first I thought they were joking or monsters were a rare occurance... Nope apperantly at anytime one of the detentionairs could have gotten gobbled up.
