After everything that has happened to Detroit, I wouldn't be surprised if it was hit with a bizarre and technically impossible category 5 hurricane.

What's impossible about a Category 5? Improbable that one would make it that far as a Cat 5, but still technically possible. Or are you thinking of the dreaded Category 6?

(Wow, I just read the plot synopsis of that. Those writers Fail Physics Forever.)

New tropical storm in the gulf.

The good news, New Orleans won't have to worry about the swamp fire any more.

The bad news, 10 to 20 inches of rain on a city below sea level.

can i ask a question, concerning the hurricane?
just...why?
i would understand small countries with little extensions, and thus having no choice, but i mean...america is pretty friggin huge...so why do you have to build in places where hurricanes tend to form? i mean, i suppose you do have a lot of free space in the middle of the state, and it's not like in old times were it would take years to have food transversed from one side to the other, so...why do people still live in hurricane-risk places?

“Well,” he said. “We’re in the Forgotten hunting grounds I take it. Your screams just woke them up early. Congratulations, Lyara.”
“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.
“There, I did something. I clapped. I like clapping,” he said. -The Investigator And The Case Of The Missing Brain.

Hurricanes are pretty friggin huge and they can hit anywhere on the gulf or east coast and travel far inland. Essentially the southeastern third of the US is threatened by hurricanes, like the northern third is threatened by blizzards and the western third is threatened by earthquakes. It really isn't something that you can avoid.

It's not a sufficiently large risk for many people to abandon their families, friends, and/or jobs. And land is land, after all, and coastal lands are profitable places to live from a shipping/fishing/tourism perspective.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Yeah, if you wanted to avoid hurricanes being a serious threat you'd basically have to abandon everything east of the Appalachians and south of New Jersey.  Plus, those are some of all of the oldest states in the union.  People have been living there since before we had anywhere else to go.

Derp, am I the only one without power/internet?

Thankfully, I reside safely inside massachusetts, so I'm ok.

The trees, less so.

We've been having serious power problems. Apparently things are just blowing everywhere in my town for no discernible reason.

The one that is way out in the Atlantic and unlikely to hit the US?

not much to worry about yet.

Or the tropical storm that just flooded New Orleans?

I know that Kenner wasn't flooded and that there were levee and pump problems but the city fared adequately, but tornadoes and flooding claimed at least 3 lives elsewhere in its path.

Same reason that Australians all tend to live on their coasts--the center of the country is a wasteland. (Literal in their case, figurative in ours).
Having been born in Iowa, I can vouch that I'd rather live through a hurricane every few years than live in Iowa.

Thankfully, Katia is expected to blow back out to sea, which is good because it's looking organized and strong.
