I had flickery lights (and internet) last night, but it went away.

And Irene is no longer a hurricane.

So, how was everyone's hurricane experience?

Personally, I wish it just stayed in the ocean and kept giving us awesome waves, and not head north.

No damage, then again, we are a near-sea-level tropical area that regularly gets hit to the point of recreationally chilling out in <CAT3 hurricanes when they arrive (and taking on <CAT3 hurricane surges as surfing challenges; Hell, we throw hurricane parties (they feel better if they're mostly harmless, and make a good reason to stay home)), and only really evacuating if higher than that (or given mandatory order; voluntarily, you'll see a startlingly large number of people in the tropics shrug it off and stay home), and on a direct line (slowly) across the state. That, or simply hovering on top of us for a few days. Recovery turnover rate is surprisingly fast, even after the hurricane triplets of mid-last decade hit (A nasty trio, mostly CAT3s). Worst case was no power for half or a whole week. It sucked, but we're used to it.

 It didn't effect me too much, although I had to stay up all night watching a water-filled hole in case it started flooding the basement. And a number of inconveniences occurred right around now which required power to be resolved. And I have class tomorrow.

 The power outage lasted less than 24 hours, so I gotta be thankful for that at least.

Power's been out here at Long Island for little over a day now (posting from smartphone).  There's about half a million outages in this area alone and the power company says it'll take several days to restore everything.

The shorelines were pretty well-flooded from what I understand, and there are many downed trees, but I haven't seen any terrible property damage in the neighborhood.  A couple of huge old trees in front of my apartment were split down the middle and mercifully landed parallel to the building instead of on top of it.

Parts of New England may be having a rougher time.  A friend from CT sent me a pic of the flooded car park outside the hotel they were trapped in; the water was up to the stop sign and a police boat was floating by.  All in all though, this was a relatively safe storm, thank heavens, though whether this was in spite or a consequence of the apocalyptic media coverage, I'm not sure.

I'm perfectly fine here.  The basement didn't even flood.  Mountain ftw.

All clear in Raleigh. We didn't even get localized flooding. Light branches and leaves down, power out intermittently for a while, no major damage. I was at work all day Saturday.

Weak storm, no damage except a day-long power outage. I've had better than Irene.


The most significant event of it was the county executive trying to ban alcohol sales for that Sunday, because drinking and driving during a hurricane is dangerous.

My prediction is a very, very bad season.

Yup, Tropical Storm Katia. Still at least a week out though. September and October are typically like this, with 1-3 named storms active at any one time. What makes a season bad or not is how many of them piddle themselves out in the ocean vs. how many barrel into inhabited landmasses.
