I can't see what's going on because it's dark, but I got woken up by a bang at 4:00 AM, so I think Irene is knocking down tree limbs.

Sorry, that was me shooting the hurricane in the face. Or at least somebody did, because she didn't cause much fuss up this way. Never lost power, roads aren't flooded, etc. They *are* slippery though. And with a gusty 20-30mph crosswind, driving into work this morning was like playing Mario Kart with a shoddy D-pad.

Out on the beaches, there's several piers tore up and some bad flooding in New Bern. She's down to a mid-strength Cat 1, which is good news for places up north, because she might not even be a hurricane by the time NYC comes into play. All in all, it's gone pretty well for being the first one in eight years to hit us.

This marks the 10th time this morning I've had to reboot my internet connection. Of all the parts of hurricanes I like the least, it's losing internet access.

Yeah, power is being spazzy onsite this morning. Guess we're getting another outer band moving through -- wind is blowing pretty good out there now.

I live in Virginia Beach, so I had to evac.  The hotel we reserved for this sold our rooms, so we stayed in the first pet friendly hotel we could get.  Knights Inn is shit.  Clerk hardly spoke English, had to fight to get towels, beds are lumpy, and it seems like everyone in the surrounding area is a hick (shopkeep across the street called a bunch of little kids "lil' shits")...  At least no bed bugs.

Also the pretend-knight-castle thing is nice for a zombie fort.  Walled on all sides, would be perfect with a few touch ups.

Watching newscasts from the US today is like watching endless reruns of Deep Impact. East coast governors must have practiced their "strong, yet compassionate" facial expressions for months just for an event like this.

LOL...whereabouts did you evac to? Much of rural Virginia is....colorful, to put it diplomatically.

Some place called Madison Heights.  To be honest, I hope Irene destroys my house so we can move back West.  I love the north, and I love the west...  Virginia is neither.

Oh wow, a "suburb" of Lynchburg. That's a serious evac. Y'all crossed like 1/2 of the state.  :o

Well I watched a webcam of some guys getting hit by large waves off our coast but here in western NC everything goes on as usual. We have had some pretty powerful gusts of wind, though.

We had a closer hotel, but they sold our rooms.  Dx  Yeah, not a big fan of suburb areas.  I'm a...  Small city kinda person.  I'll just wait out Irene in the hotel room, playing away.

I find it funny that New York City is just flipping out though.  Won't Irene be weaker by the time it gets there?

Yeah, but two things:

1. They're about as used to hurricanes as they are earthquakes.  :P
2. New York City is basically one big flat island. With lots of underground tunnels and street-level openings into those tunnels. Even a modest storm surge could wreak some havoc. IIRC, the Transit Authority basically started shutting down all the subways yesterday and they're sealing the entrances to keep them from potentially flooding. Wind coud be a real problem too, considering how many tall buildings there are that just aren't built for really high wind.

Current projections have it as a weak Cat 1 or even down to a Tropical Storm by the time it hits NYC.

Back in Washington, no one even noticed these earthquakes.  I just laughed this one off, heh.  Good point though, NYC is built for luxury, not structure.

I am a bit tired of hearing how local news(and religious fanatics that I work for) talking about how Irene is the apocalypse. In so far, we've only had a little rain, and the only thing I've seen any cause for concern for(besides the sudden jump in the "emergency supplies" economy) is a slightly overflowing storm drain. Granted, the bulk of it won't hit until tomorrow, but still...
