I wouldn't want one of my allies to die in a blaze of magic anyway, so if you had magic William wouldn't use you unless he was bleeding and incapacitated, his soldiers were all dead, and we were surrounded and all options for fleeing or outsmarting the enemies where exhausted.
Then he might ask you to do some magic...but he would regret it.

Well, on the other hand, you could encourage Thomas to work on his magic arduously until it can be reliably called on in nearly any situation. That'd be nice.

By definition, every mage is a roaring whirlwind of death, capable of destroying entire armies (and the mountain they are standing on) in a blink of an eye.

Skill merely enhances ones chances of doing this on purpose.
