Well, my idea was this:

1. Erik goes to parley with Trubaldsome, leaving two people behind to act as regent.*
2. Terenos is potentially sent to Suul to smooth things over, because we were somehow blamed for the actions of Mirish Pagans.**
3. Meanwhile, Kain is sent to the Eelspine range to begin hunting down the Ztah.

*I don't know who I'd leave as regent. This is why we need more nobles and less independents.
**But Erik wants him in Preston, so...

We'll likely a pass a law preventing ships to be built by sailors for anyone other than the crown, if only because having the 1 sailor in the port be used up by some random merchant is not good for us. :P

Can I do the first star instead of hunting down the Ztah, so as not too spread Elberth too thin? Or atleast go with Erik?

I think I will be escorting Erik.

Yes.

Ludwig will likely be accompanying Erik, because he's less conspicuous and has no lands to govern. The idea of sending Kain after the Ztah is that we know they're in the eelspine somewhere, and that's his domain. He'll likely be sent after the Suulian mercs while we're at it.

Wait, can't merchants hire mercenary companies and have their own ships? Surely SCTG has some muscle and I think that once guilds get up and running, there will be an actual need for some private soldiers to protect the stores, assets and convoys. Obviously, its all up to the ruling powers whether merchants can have soldiers under their control, but I don't think that hiring regiment of light infantry to be split and sent all over the country to act as corporate security is that scary?

I guess once I get back to Elbreth I'll just go meet with Kain? My shield arm's broken, but since I don't use a shield I guess I'll still be able to fight.

Merchants can hire their own ships no problem, and there are already rules for merchants hiring mercenary guards for convoys (who refuse to attack on principle/they're not getting the danger pay).  I will make general mercenaries available for players who specifically search for them, but you can expect all the problems that mercenaries presented historically (high rates of pay, poor nerve, tendency to backstab...)

So yes, merchants can rule the seas relatively easily, but their chief problem is manpower.  Unless, of course, they take to slaving the coasts...

Edit:  In the system rebuild, if I go through with it, manpower will be used to power industry and farming as well as soldiers - so taking away manpower will hurt your economy.  Slaves will allow you to boost your manpower limit quickly rather than waiting for it to regenerate.

Ok, I understand. It was actually what i had in mind. If problems arise thouh, who knows, maybe merchants will take to organising their own regiments if the situation in the country gets bad. It will be only to support the crown though...

E: WOOT! I finally made my first 10d! Soon enough I will have guild (if Erik agrees to support me)!

As long as there isnt a manpower relation to us, it should be fine - since we can't -get- manpower

I concur, we need more nobles. But..Oh well. At least you can rely on the ones you have. More or less.
