Okay I provided johnfalcon with a PM including some background info since he wanted to be tied to my character. Are we all set for Saturday now?

Once scriver gets back with his Navigator I think you guys will be all set. I still have some stuff to do on my end but I've got a few more days to work on it.

I think for the very beginning of the adventure you guys will be separated while we do some narration.

Can't promise the best quality maps... I'm horrid when it comes to art. Due to how much time it takes to create any detail I'm going to make things very abstract. Most of the time you'll be working with walls and a few objects to represent your cover options.

Yeah, sorry for being so lazy, but I've been following the thread. Didn't get much done yesterday and then I had another game during the night. Today I had to stack a whole autum-and-winter's worth of firewood so now I'm deathly tired, and possibly coming down with a.. sickness? Language fails me.

It'll be done tomorrow, though.

Also, void-bros! They should definitely get together and play some dice to celebrate. With my dice, of course. What's so special about them? Oh, nothing, of course, they're just... real lucky for people that are not me. You'll see!

In the meantime, can anyone provide me with some recommended titles for novels set in the WH 40k universe? Something NOT in the Horus Heresy series, preferred. I want to pick up a few new ebooks to bone up on the RP aspect.

I've read one of the Ciaphas Cain books and it was a rather good read. Many people also seem to read the Eisenhorn series from Abnett, though I've never looked into it.

I strongly recommend the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies, as well as the Gaunt's Ghosts series.
Yes, I know, they're all by Dan Abnett, but he's a great writer, and I love his books.
Also, the Bastion Wars series by Henry Zou. Those are also excellent books.

Well I just got some of the books for 40k so I'll start with Eisenhorn.

If you read Ravenor not too long after Eisenhorn, it has the best effect.

My sheet as it is and stuff. Don't worry, all these separate spoilers and such are just for separation at the moment. I'll clean it up and add them all to one when I now the sheet looks fine and I don't have to redo anything.

Spoiler: Slightly revised stats (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Misc information (click to show/hide)

Department of Redundancy Department. Whether to put Navigator as a merit or quality. Oh, the big questions.

I put navigator powers as it's own heading, but perhaps you'd like me to add them under "Special Qualities" or something for conformity?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Just Gear (click to show/hide)

Some questions that came up:

1. How are thrones determined? I can't find that part.
2. Do I gain Navigation (Warp) (Int) as an advanced or basic skill from being a Navigator?
2b. Does it make any difference for my character? I know the difference between basic and advanced (basic can be tried without any skill in it) but is there a difference between having for example Navigation as a basic or advanced skill for my character?
3. Should I decide my mutation, or will you roll? Because if I were to choose, I'd take Disturbing Grace, while my own roll landed me on Pale and Hairless Flesh. If you'd rather roll it yourself, though, I won't mind.
4. Should I put my Lineage's benefits somewhere on here as well? Destitute and Mercantile Opportunist that is.
5. I need to decide where my Concealed Cavity is before we start, don't I? :P
6. I suppose I should name my Linage/House as well, right? So, I'm just wondering if there is any prevailing name/language culture I should adhere to for lore-correctness? German-ish, maybe?
7. Is it okay if I add some sort of headscarf or something to my inventory, like the vanilla Navigator has?
8. Would you like me to flesh out a backstory as well?

And lastly, about advances. What is "elite advances", exactly? Just "high level" advances?
Also, I haven't spent any experience yet, but I'm thinking of buying skills Disguise (because somebody who is both Void Born and a Navigator definitely have reason yo learn how to disguise his appearance) and Gambling (because why am I carrying around "lucky" dice? ;)), as well as Psyniscience (but maybe this will be redundant with Navigator powers?) and Scholastic Lore (Astromancy) to get me closer to a vanilla Navigator skillset. Would that be allright? Not all together, I mean - I don't even know how much that would cost, but each on it's own consideration.

So. That's it for now, I think. Sorry for being late, and sorry if it is unclear - it would not surprise me because I'm slightly feverish and my mind feels like mashed potatoes. I can't shake the feeling that I've forgotten something either though, but I can't figure out what it was.

Available XP:   400
Spent XP:      0

Cold Guild Courier gives +5 Perception and -5 Toughness.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Navigation (Warp) (Int) is an advanced skill, and Talented (Concealment) will become Talented (Stealth).

Navigator the Merit adds the Navigator quality. You're good.

Nope, I prefer it this way in fact.

1. How are thrones determined? I can't find that part.

They don't apply to Rogue Trader. You guys deal in real wealth, not the paltry sum that Acolytes (Dark Heresy) get.

The only difference between Advanced and Basic skills is that Basic can be used even without the skill. Advanced skills can only be used if you have the skill.

Using Basic skills untrained halves the relevant stat though.

Rolled 48: Eyes as Dark as the Void. You gain the Dark Sight trait.

Quote
4. Should I put my Lineage's benefits somewhere on here as well? Destitute and Mercantile Opportunist that is.

Probably not needed. I'm not sure how I'll do Destitute. Probably start you off with a loan or something that needs to be paid off.

Quote
5. I need to decide where my Concealed Cavity is before we start, don't I? :P

Heh, that's up to you. Best to make it somewhere which doesn't require a partner's assistance.

Quote
6. I suppose I should name my Linage/House as well, right? So, I'm just wondering if there is any prevailing name/language culture I should adhere to for lore-correctness? German-ish, maybe?

Being a Games Workshop setting, everything is UK influenced. However it's a big galaxy and a sci-fantasy theme allows for almost anything.

Quote
7. Is it okay if I add some sort of headscarf or something to my inventory, like the vanilla Navigator has?

Go for it.

Quote
8. Would you like me to flesh out a backstory as well?

What you have is fine, though it might be interesting to know why your character is a Cold Guild Courier. Perhaps it ties in with that massive debt your Destitution trait gives you.

Quote
And lastly, about advances. What is "elite advances", exactly? Just "high level" advances?

While the name might imply "higher", what an Elite Advance really is is a non-standard advancement. It's basically my way of freeing you guys from the game's class system, which here is simply to determine starting skills and such.

Well, you probably won't need Disguise except in situations where others would too. Navigators are practically a form of nobility and the only mutant group who are tolerated in the Imperium (due to how invaluable they are for warp travel). And yes, to all. I'll even give you Psyniscience for free since it's an important Navigator starting skill. I'll let you purchase Scholastic Lore (Astromancy) for 100 and the other two for 200XP each.

Ah, I was just wondering since the books made clear Void Born/Shipwise got me Navigation (Stellar) and Pilot (Starcraft) as basic skills rather than advanced. If there ain't no difference, there ain't no problem.

Sounds good to me.

Cavities in my cavities! I was going to put it the hind parts, but I'll think I'll go with my left thigh instead.

Well, since Mordy is from a "fallen" and relatively weak and unimportant Lineage, they aren't always able to choose clients - and the Cold Guild pays well. I was thinking Mordeci was the result of an unsanctioned union as well (seeming as his mother was a Psyker, that is, not Navigator) and was mostly only  accepted by the Lineage because of their low (and "Destitute") status - they don't care as much for his diluted genes and thus viewed him as sacrificeable in comparison to their more pureblooded children. And being "scum" at heart, Mordeci didn't mind especially much ;)
Of course, that was just the family the generator gave me so there's no reason not to change it, but I like it.

The Cold Guild gig would have since run out, though, and he was contracted to the Pilgrim instead.

It is thinkable, of course, that he was handed to the Cold Guild because either he or is Lineage owed them money or favours, but I'd think it more interesting if he's owing the Cold Guild money himself, possibly for compromised smuggle-goods. Possibly still alive because the Guild sees the benefits from having a Navigator (and by extent, his Lineage) indebted to them.

I was mostly thinking I would be able to use it to negate or at least lessen some of the hits to FEL I get from being a Navigator ;)
On the other hand, the manuals pointed out that while Navvie's (Na'Vi? NOOOOOOO) are a kind of in-practice nobility, they are just barely tolerated and still under threat from both Inquisition and superstitious people (lynching just being a misunderstanding away) - it's mostly bodyguards and/or influence that keep them safe, and Mordeci lack money to the first and his low profile Lineage lack the second.

Haven't decided about the advances yet, though. Still thinking about that name too. I'm too damn indecisive when it comes to these stuffs.

Don't think so. I may have corrected the Stealth skill change on my own, check the main page and see if everything is appropriate.
