I HOPE EA will look at other, similar remakes of games from the 90's and accept the fact that "staying true" can still generate big monies. Games like Heroes of Might and Magic, Civilization (let's leave the debate about V out of it), and Colonization all were decent sellers that followed most of the orginial formulas.

I learned a long time ago that EA is just a slut publisher. They'll put their names on almost anything. Some of the things they put them name on are good, some are terrible. Hopefully this is a sign that EA will pay someone to remake the game. Hopefully EA will pick someone good. Hopefully EA will stay out of it.

Hopefully....

No matter what comes out of it, it will be spoiled with DRM that bricks computers. Except in illegal copies, those will have it removed, and will probably ship within 5 days of release.

I'd be perfectly happy if they just republished the game with better interface design and capable of running well on current OS macs. Lion ditched the old Power PC compatibility and now I have to reboot for AC. This makes me sad.

I would be fine if they gave it the Civ V treatment. It would be different in a lot of ways but real thought would be given into the shortfalls of the system and a decent attempt at a good game would be made.

 I'm an optimist.

Wouldn't it be great if they were doing this to prevent anyone else from making an Alpha Centauri game?

After they will re-make (read - sell us a texture pack for civilization) a game im pretty sure i will say that would be lesser evil.

It'll get the X-Com treatment. Just you watch.

Colonization was pretty much an extensive mod on the Civ IV engine, and imo it was pretty awesome. If dumbed down a little. Civ V however, has even less awesome in it than Civ IV did. So...myeh...

This isn't a move to defend an IP. They're already looking into Syndicate as well, starting last year. They're taking their hint from the movie industry, which is in the fifth stage of Sequelitis.

I hope they turn it into a first person shooter.  I wanna shoot up some mindworms with Yang!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In fact it may be lot more closer than somebody could exepct..... I would not be suprised to see that, thats what they did with Xcom.....

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Alpha Centauri's greatness came from a sense of restraint and a unified, cohesive vision (which is part of why the expansion fell so flat for many people, there simply wasn't room for it).

I honestly don't know if another group can pull it off. Reynold's (the guy who designed the bulk of the game), was a pretty special guy. Even if he did eventually turn to the dark side.

I could actually see this working if they made something close to Divine Cybermancy and played up the faction politics angle. That could be fairly rad.

An Action RPG set in the Alpha Centauri universe? I think I just peed a little.

Anyway, I'm expecting something somewhere in between a mediocre re-imagining and a complete bastardization. Prove me wrong EA!

EA has failed every test the gaming industry has put in front of it so far, why should it start trying to pull itself out of the earth's core now?

I don't understand what there is to get upset about. It has been 15 years. I had no expectation of ever seeing an Alpha Centauri again. If we get something bad, we will have lost nothing. If we get something good, at least there's that.
