Also, I doubt music will lay ground to a noise simulation. It's typically the kind of thing Toady would do, but I don't think there are enough applications that would use it.

*Ahem*.

Urist McNoble has heard a well-crafted symphony lately.

Urist McMom cancels drink -- child crying.

Urist McPeasant cancels drink -- disturbed by ghostly wails of Urist McDead.

Bargov The Fear Titan Roars!
-Urist McSpearDwarf has become terrified.
-Urist McSpearDwarf flees the battle.
-Urist McSwordsDwarf has become terrified.
-Urist McSwordsDwarf flees the battle.
-Urist McMaceDwarf has become terrified.
-Urist McMaceDwarf flees....

Urist McHauler cancels Bring Item To Stockpile - Responding to Alarm Bell.

Urist McInsomniac has slept uneasily do to loud noise lately.

Urist McMarksdwarf has killed Barghov The Fear Titan - unaffected due to losing both his ears in a training accident 3 months prior.

All that doesn't require a whole tile by tile sound simulation complete with sound dispersion, modification, amplification or echo. I think a simple system would do just as well as another real-time CPU eater, that's all.

Also, its WORTH to discuss WHAT the bells would do.

Wake up sleeping dorfs, so they can rush to the barracks and arm up?

Did you know that if you write 3.14 on a piece of paper and hold it in a mirror, it will say pie? And if you divide 42 by 3.14... you get 13.37!

It is incredibly satisfying to kill a man with a butterfly.

Which brings up the whole aspect of having deaf dwarves. How would they communicate with other dwarves? Dwarven sign language? Would they have Proficient Lip Reader skill?

That would be both sweet and a definate bummer for adventurers. We already have blind dwarves.

Why? Isnt it better to leave them be, and let their tiny little minds go insane as they try to escape?
