Demons - wat? (May have spoilers for beginners)
« on: August 05, 2011, 06:41:34 pm »

Hi again.

So, I was following my former dorfs from Fortress mode into their migrating adventure after I abandonded their fort with my adventurer, and on the way they (and me) 'found' 2 demons (and there are probably more) on the mountains.

I don't want to lose these migrants, this world nor this adventurer, so since this is a world I'm playing my own way, no matter what, I decided to take on the demons.

So alright, they can kill me in two turns. A hydra took at least 5 turns or more to kill me, which gave me a chance to win if I had 10 or more followers..
But now I'm alone, and the demons kill me two fast...what I did? I cheated.

I took down their skills and their strenght/endurance/agility/toughness, yet they don't die (because they are huge)...

I don't think they will die easily - even if I hacked the hell out of their abilities.. (this is the first time I cheat, and will only do it to invencible monsters btw - I didn't cheat to kill everything else)

Anyway, are Demons 'made' for killing at all? Or are they invencible creatures?
Is there any tricks to kill them? What about a demon blob with three tails made of Vomit?
 ::) Thanks :)

Okay, after I posted this I managed to kill them.
Giving them ridiculous attribs and no skills...
Are they supposed to be invincible or what? No way I could kill it with 10 followers anyway, with their full stats and abilities. They'd take 15 turns to kill everyone of them...it took 20 turns or more to kill one of them with no attribs.

It honestly feels like a lot of their problems came from the fact that their entire team was composed of cats, and the people who were supposed to be herding them were also cats.

They arn't that tough they just arn't pushovers that can easily be taken out by a fresh adventurer.

Not to mention that the Demons actually can gain skills unlike other megabeasts.

There was a thread around here somewhere about demons. The reason they are so awesome is that not only are they HUGE compared to dorfs but they are all legendary in most combat related skills

No, yep. That's what I meant too. I want to come out of the theater completely fucked up for weeks.

They are definitely not invincible. Also, if you were having that much trouble with hydras, you obviously need higher skills and better equipment.

Demons are invincible in the same sense that a GCS is invincible, but more. They don't hurt, they don't cry, they don't breath, they don't pass out, they don't do much of anything except turn you to dust. They just keep fighting.

And if you're worried about cheating: don't be :P this is DF, play your way.

Meh. GCSs are pushovers now.

Wiki says their size is generally around 10.000.000. Half that of a BC, but definitely not something to be trifled with. My dorfs have learned that the hard way, multiple times. :P

Exactly, I tried all tactics but it would just turn me into pieces in 2 attacks.
I don't want to lose this migrant group/adventurer (the migrant group all have custom nicknames - they are all my former dorfs!)
This damn Demon Spider and Demon ..cloud of vomit killed around 5 peeps already, so I got my adventurer and went on a search for them on the mountains (took 1 hour to find them)..now I can escort them out of there..

Also, thanks, in this map I'll cheat simply because I'm fucking (meta) God on this one.
But usually I like random stuff happening and don't mind to see my favorite dorfs dying, it's the game's "rules".
However, those demons weren't even on Legends nor anything. They just lurked into my migrating group area and started collecting kills, and NOW they are..

They are definitely not invincible. Also, if you were having that much trouble with hydras, you obviously need higher skills and better equipment.

Yup, my equipment sucked back then and the skills were only average, so I need around 7 guys to meatshield help me.
They aren't invincible but their huge size and the fact that they don't fall over/faint/pass out etc makes it impossible for a lonely adventurer to kill one.

Eh, I had a pretty good run at the demons with a well-trained adventurer after drawing the sword from a demonic fortress. I had crap armor, but I slaughtered everything so fast that I was pushing my way into HFS.

How to kill demons - a quick tutorial:

{S}neak, move close to them (10 tiles with moderate ambusher skill works ok), then start throwing things, all sorts of things.

{t}hrow axes, spears, swords, armour, clothes, shoes, stones, mud, sand, vomit, blood, water, fluffy wamblers, worms, butterflies, enemy corpses, your own severed limbs, your own corpse... literally anything you can get. Keep doing this, and at some point they WILL die. I'd write a macro though, just to preserve your sanity.

This guy gets it, the problem with the child torture dungeon is that they weren't set on fire first.

That is more or less a strategy for anything. Except that demons are almost always faster, tougher, more numerous, and more deadly than anything else you can try it on. Not to mention throwing takes a long time regardless of skill, and they will still happily use their range whenever possible.
