The thing about the new versions...

They're always improving. 31.25 all the way.

This. Besides, if one wants to give feedback to Toady, it makes sense to use the latest version. So it is actually better to have people playing the newest version, instead of the older ones.

40d was rather boring adventuring. I found myself wandering around and hoping a random cougar would appear. Now there are an endless number of quests, which give you a direction to adventure in.

Obviously, I voted for 31.25. I think adventure mode will just keep getting better, though.

40d had it's own things, for example, Goblin golf... or wolf golf (oh, those nasty 40d wolves. bogeymen are lame compared to them, imo) and underground roads were AWESOME!
but i prefer .25 because of cavern layers, more quests, varied monster lairs, adventure crafting though still being a bit crude.
I just wish that someday, Toady finishes other civ towns and we can go rampaging into a gobbo dark towers

both I usually take what ever adventure mode gives me and make it my own experience.
40d had world interaction that one could really manipulate the world if they give it a try.
sadly the removal of said world interaction left work of silly solo play and giving us the ability to make adventure mods, though I wish for the days toady brings back that migrants and roaming sentient in the travel screen and killing a leader or head official causes the town to pack up and scatter to a local joint.

Why not try both for yourself? The only way you can really find out what you like, is doing it yourself.

Can I gouge their eyes out in .40d? Bite out their throats? Chop off each finger and toe?

NO?

Then 31.25 for me.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then youkill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.
Dwarf Fortress: So horrifying the players would rather talk about nice things, like Warhammer 40k.
