Ergh... Purpose?
« on: July 27, 2011, 12:30:33 am »

As far as I'm concerned, I lead a pretty good life. I see people on Life Advice just pouring out their problems and, I really really really don't mean any offense to anyone, but, in comparison, my life is pretty good.

I mean, sure, there are some aspects of my life that I figure could be improved. I've been largely ignored by most of my friends for much of the summer and I apparently have a pretty remarkable ability to sneak around undetected even in plain sight. I just blend in. Unfortunately, this, in combination with my quietness, doesn't help my problem of being ignored.

Aside from that, though... I figure my life is peachy. A few problems with perfectionist tendencies here and there, but for the most part, I was raised well (I think...?) by a stable mother and father and have stayed mostly under the radar in terms of school, so I'm not bothered much.

At this point, I'm trying to figure out my purpose. I don't mind the anti-sociability all that much, even if it really hurts sometimes, but I sit on the computer for much of the day. When I was younger, this didn't bother me nearly as much. However, I'm 17 now, and I feel like I should be doing something great and impressive, like assisting the march of science. Or... I feel like I should be doing something at the least a bit more impressive than sitting on the computer, delivering newspapers on Wednesday and Saturday, and occasionally doing household chores.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't have much natural talent for creative outlets. I'm a relatively experienced pianist of 12 years, but I hate practicing and composing in front of people at the piano. I've tried to compose on Acoustica Mixcraft and Finale, but both attempts have been met with a failed willpower check, leading me to do more comforting things like play League of Legends. Other than that, my art skills are far below sub-par, and I have a serious problem attempting creative outlets that I can't do well.

TL;DR, I'm on the computer all the time and I need to find my purpose in life.

Or...final question: is this just a typical aspect of puberty and I'm just supposed to wait it out?

I don't think you can wait out the urge to find your purpose in life. If you haven't found anything that really sticks out to you yet you should keep looking. Its important that you have passion for what you choose, otherwise you could end up with a lot of regrets later in life. Personally, I hope you choose science though :D.

Dammit, Knirisk, stop being me 90% of the internet in many respects D:
Fixed. (This is actually serious though, there's lots of people like you, don't be so selfish :P)

More seriously, just try something. If you find something you like, you won't have any more to say about this. The average B12er seems to enjoy programming, roleplaying, Mafia, and/or writing. Give those a try, see if any of them "stick" to you. If you want something outside of a computer, try meditating, learn to lucid dream, or the old trusty "going somewhere with friends" thing.

And your final question: Yes, definitely. But waiting doesn't always mean doing nothing.

Well, I do enjoy physics and some of the theoretical aspects of science, but it later becomes more trial and error rather than discovery.

I..umm...tried roleplaying, writing, and programming once upon a time, but none of them really stuck. Roleplaying and writing somewhat go hand-in-hand, so I can do neither. Meditating sounds like a good idea, I've tried learning to lucid dream before, and the "going somewhere with friends" sounds like a fun thing to do...except that my friends either don't really talk to me, have a few scheduling problems of their own, or are just boring and rely on me to think of something to do.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

A year ago, I actually decided that one of my main goals was to be kind to people and make friends, but that sort of fell through the floor after the past two semesters.

You could make an awesome goal, like build a railgun.

I will always be impressed by the guy who builds railguns.

I also am impressed by men who build railguns. I have a rudimentary knowledge of physics and electromagnetism, so I figure I might be able to build a railgun with a bit of online help. That said, there are costs to be associated with a railgun. Costs which I can't afford yet at this stage in life. I have a paper route, which gets me upwards of 70-80 dollars a month, but that is still quite small. Also, I couldn't ask my parents for money, either, because our family just barely hovers over the lower class income, even if my dad has a job.

Also, I happened upon this Cracked article: http://www.cracked.com/article_15231_7-reasons-21st-century-making-you-miserable.html

And now I'm perhaps thinking that two of my previous ideas (to be kind and needing to find a purpose) are actually right and are NOT actually separate problems. Thinking now, perhaps I should be attempting to compose for other people rather than my own enjoyment. If I dedicated a composition to somebody and fully intended on presenting it to someone, I'm sure that creates more motivation to write that damn piece than just "oh herp derp, doin' it fer mah own enjoyment". I mean, sure, I'd still feel gratified that I actually wrote the piece.

Fur Elise is one of Beethoven's most well-known pieces, after all.

And arguing about politics.  Don't forget about that.

I second the Mafia (I help run the subforum, so come say hi!  We won't bite.  Probably) and will add reading books to your list.  If you try to read a variety of authors and genres, with a book a week, I think you may find your understanding of the world broadening substantially.  That broadening perspective will help you understand what you want to do and what you care about.

Oh, and learn to knit or something.  That's always helpful.

If you are interested in a game of mafia (Yes, I am turning this into a promotion thread, because I am a dick like that) then we have a newbies game going on, with two slots open, so we would very much welcome you. Thread is here.

Make that three slots since Kilakan asked for a replacement :/

Well, I'm not particularly experienced with politics, so I don't really argue about politics. Pretty much the only thing I have an opinion on with politics is that our government leaders spend too much time squabbling between the two parties and attempting to maintain their positions to actually help run the damn government and make the right decisions. But that's about all.

And from what I've seen on Mafia... you will bite. Pretty hard, actually. I've seen people accused of being scum for both talking too much, not at all, or just talking.

As for books, well... I forget to go to the library in the early afternoons. The nearest library is not open for very long and has a somewhat mediocre selection of books. There is the much larger library nearby, but I need a car to go there, and I'd rather not ask for rides. (I have this...thing with independence. I'd rather walk in heavy rains through shin-deep puddles than ask for a ride home)

Ah, I meant that we are mostly nice people outside of the game.

But if it's not your party, we totally understand =)  Just thought I'd suggest it, in case.

I still highly recommend the library... part of your purpose can be trying to remember to go and entertain yourself with what's available ;]
