It's rough gems, and I have plenty of them; however, he's still screaming about needing them.
There are other things he needs that I don't have; could these be related?

yes, mood materials are in an ordered list.  if you do not have one item in the list, the dwarf will not get the next material in the list.

Ah.

Okay, fresh problem; I've created a whole bunch of the first item on the list, but he doesn't seem to want to go after it. Rock blocks, if you're wondering.

You need everything on the list or he is a dead dwarf.

So he won't collect any of it if I don't have all of it.

Crap. He's a legendary weaponsmith and he's already grabbed a ton of candy.

What are ALL the things he is requesting?

Rock blocks, yarn cloth, more rock blocks, rough gems, candy wafers.

Looks like the yarn is going to be the stumbling block.

You don't have any shearable animals around? I hope you get a caravan soon. If your biome contains any shearable wild animals, you could send the military out to kill stuff until some of them turn up.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Sorry for the question, but did you already check with 't' on the workshop the list of materials he already collected? And his preferences, perhaps he likes a certain kind of yarn.

Nah, material subtypes don't usually matter for moods... they only rarely matter for metalsmith moods, who may request a specific base metal. If he wants yarn cloth, any type of yarn will do. If he wants rock blocks, any type of rock or metal will do. If he wants normal stone, he'll seek out his favorite type if it's available, but if it's not he'll go for the nearest one.

As for what to do about it... yeah, lock him up in hopes of getting a yarn-bearing caravan (dwarves and humans usually bring at least a few bins of yarn).
