A terribly boring edict, though. All you have left afterwards is crazy may-or-may-not-be-any-threat rebel lady.

Well, turning off firefox helped my play a little longer. But I noticed something. I have 6 GB of RAM, and I'm not even using 1 of them before running tropico. The task manager says that tropico is using almost 1 GB of memory......So where are my other 4 gigabytes? I have a quad core, could that be the problem? Maybe I need to assign more cores to tropico or something along those lines?

Assign tropico to a core which nothing else uses and you should be good. I don't think you can assign multiple cores to process the same program.

Well it seems that if I close out firefox and start a new game, I can complete a full island without a problem. I will try assigning a core though. I have no idea how to, but I've got a search bar :)

Sorry for Necroing but..
I just bought the game on steam relatively cheap.
Only base game tough, will concider the DLC at a later time.
But, will the DLCs be worth it?
That is my question for now.

The DLCs aren't worth it in my opinion.

Modern Times is probably the best one to get. After a certain amount of time, you get modern buildings that's cost more but more effective. It makes late game more interesting.

It does make it more interesting, but also a LOT easier. Most of the new buildings are waaaay too effective

I didn't mind some of the other ones as much, since you can use the new buildings in any scenario. BUT I haven't bought any DLC's when they weren't on sale for like $1 each. So... wait til they're super cheap.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Definitely get Modern Times, it's much more akin to an expansion than the rest of the DLC (much like Absolute Power was for Tropico 3). You could probably skip out on the rest of them.

Yes, I know, the last time someone posted in this thread was more than one year ago but I don't think a new "Tropico 4" thread is a good idea.

Shouldn't the social class (Worker, Military, Executives,...) be separated from the political opinion (Communism, Capitalism, Environnementalism,..)?

Thus we could make workers, farmers and poors more likely to vote for the Tropico Communist Party, military officers to vote for the Phalangist Party and businessmen to vote for the Liberal Party ("Liberal" as in "Classical Liberalism").

Moreover, some social classes could have 'special abilities' i.e. landowners, businessmen could fund anti-communist parties or workers could make strikes.

Of course this will have to be refined.

This is already the case, citizens can belong to more than one faction.  For example, someone can be both military and communist or military and capitalist.

I meant considering social classes as factions adhering to an ideology (i.e. landowners should be mostly conservative and workers mostly communists).

And, moreover, such classes should interviene in the game: workers could strike, businessmen could fund your Swiss account in exchange of privatisations, landowners could fund the Conservative Party or even the Phalangist one and military officers could do a putsch.

And such separation could enable a more fluid link between the social class and the political opinions (for exemple, an military officer could be communist.)

Well guess who's back - again.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Tropico 1 & 2 are definite must play classics. 3 introduced cars and garages. 4 probably completely replaced 3 in the same way smart phones replace eachother, but dulled the game in terms of difficulty compared to 1-2. Tropico 5 introduced squad based dynamics and dynasties, which was interesting, and would probably be the modern to-go version for me.

Any impressions of the latest installment, yay or nay?

Yes, I know, the last time someone posted in this thread was more than one year ago but I think this is the new Tropico thread.

Having pretty much not played Tropico since the very first entry (bought the 4th when it was on error-sale for 99% off, but bounced off the UI), I tried the free beta weekend of Tropico 6 earlier this month and was rather impressed. Managed to screw up my first beta game by overspending on military in the cold war era to keep the generals happy, which seems a fitting way to lose.

The UI is loads better than 1 and 4, being much more intuitive and easier to navigate. After playing the free beta I gave 4 another shot, only to be convinced it was worth getting 6. Relatedly, from what I've read they've made some good changes/refinements both to the UI and other features in response to the beta feedback, which is always nice for a developer to do.

In terms of the touted new features, I agree with Rock Paper Shotgun on the islands -- it doesn't seem significant at first, but over the course of a game it does help break up the pace & style of expansion.

Election speeches are brought back from prior entries, as I understand it, and don't seem terribly notable.

While the monument-stealing is stylistically too goofy for my tastes, in terms of mechanics I think it's done well. Each era has a small selection to pick from with significant effects, but you only get to pick one from each era.

On the whole, I feel like it strikes a nice balance between the 'no worries, just relax' city builders and the 'tough as nails' city builders out there.

My only concern -- which isn't well-researched, just an impression I have -- is that heavy industrialization was the only way to keep the economy afloat. My attempts at tourism have been moneypits, and focusing on less polluting (less advanced) industry didn't bring in enough money starting in the cold war era. I'm planning on spending more time with it once the 1.0 is actually out. [edit: looks like it's actually out now, whoops].
