It is comforting to imagine that if one brought lot of them to the site at embark, one's dwarves won't run out into the path of any and all lethal hazard to retrieve the socks of friend and foe alike, but the Dwarven lust for socks knows no bounds.

Doesn't explain the sock cravings of female dwarves. While females may choose to be notorious wankers, socks are not particularly helpful to them in this endeavor.

there's always odds and ends cluttering up the place.
couple extra picks from that mining accident, some socks from dead folk, bars purchased from the trader before my metal industry is set up, thread from butchered animal hair, etc.

crap just starts gettin outta hand before i can start getting bins churned out.

plus, i HATE using wood for objects that can be made from anything else.
I'd rather have lead bins than wooden ones.

Just embark on a heavily forested area, plenty of wood, infact more than enough.
