Every Time I see a promo for a show on cartoon network/every time I have the misfortune of seeing what they are doing with the pokemon anime.

In Today's episode Pikachu loses to another starter pokemon!

Honestly, can't they LET pikachu be strong? I mean did the writers forget about the Orange League?

I don't mind "remakes" as long as they make sense in the universe they're in.

Transformers?  Meh.  I never watched the movies after the first one, and I never watched the cartoons as a kid.  From what I heard, though, the cartoons were a heck of a lot better.

The Smurfs?  It's an obvious gag aimed at children and the (far) too easily entertained.  Someone said, "Smurfs, huh?  Well, we should make them moronic - Their brains are small, right? - And have them make lots potty jokes - For the kids, y'know?  It'll be a hit!"

In general, with a few exceptions, Hollywood tends to take a fresh, beautiful idea, chew on it, spit it on the sidewalk, paint it a different color, draw a picture of it using a pencil stuck in its ear, and then it takes a look at it and decides to do something else entirely.  I don't trust film makers with something they don't care about.

What I do in these regards of childhood memories getting thrashed is that I just ignore them and hope they fade into obscurity (kinda like the childhood cure for nightmares and annoying things} while the originals regain their old shine.

I find it funny that old Cartoon Cartoons are airing on Cartoon Network again one time or another. I mean, just a few days ago, I was utterly surprised to see 2 Stupid Dogs air. Just the mere fact that show aired again brought me some hope that Cartoon Network might think of bringing back (or coming up with) quality entertainment again. At least they still remember their old audience. I mean, [adult swim] was great and all, but even we want to watch Cartoon Network during the daytime sometimes too, so have some classics play once in awhile.

BTW, my inner child was more a Sega gamer. Sonic games to be more precise. The direction they went with Sonic Heroes and 2006, and the overall music direction afterward (especially with lyrics) :twitch:, not the best reaction for me. I'll stay in the past where it was fun, and see what modders have done with it.

The newer Shining Force titles.  (You know, the ones that AREN'T turned based strategy games?  Or even strategy games AT ALL)

Most of the new sonic games. (Sonic Colors' gameplay wasn't bad for what I played of it.  If a little gimmicky sometimes.)

New X-Com.  Sorta.  The way they are handling it sounds very very bad.  But I'll reserve final judgement til march 2011.

Whenever somebody says "Puff the magic Dragon" was drug inspired.

I mostly have that feeling when I try to re-watch/read something I liked at 8-10.
I have been waaaay too easily entertained. I loved Tom Clancy's book (they sucks) Robin Hood (Okay, sorta, for an action movie), the club of four (... ... ...) Buck Danny (the characters are pretty bland, and most of the stories boring...) but remembered all of them as entertainment masterpieces.

My parents are remodeling my house, that means they're replacing the rugs I laid on when I was five, the whetbar my parents told me not to climb on when I was six and the drawers I used as steps to get to the top of the fridge when I was seven. It's really sad to see so much stuff I was so familiar with just... disappear.

Yeah, I think Kael pretty much trumped any response in this thread ever. Perspective, guys.  :-\

That said, for me it's not so much the defilement of childhood entertainment (I've grown numb to that), but the physical transformation of the landscape.

Growing up, I lived out in dairy farming country, where there were numerous farms just down the "highway" (which was a two-lane state road). We had no streetlights, and there was basically one main road in either direction that went "into town", said town being several miles away. You rode through thick forest with few landmarks. Every house you passed (and there weren't many) was set back from the road a good 500 feet or more, usually on a plot of land 3 or 4 acres (or more) and often with its own pond.

The nearest store was an honest-to-God "country store" about a mile up the road that sold everything from leaded gas to sliced bread to shotgun shells to udder cream (when it was still used for cows and not as a hand lotion) to baskets of penny candy for the kids to drool over. You wanted anything more than that, you had to go into town.

At night, it was pitch black. You could see hundreds of stars, not just the forty or fifty that I can see on an average night now. It was also deathly quiet. You could hear a squirrel step on a leaf halfway across the yard (and our yard was an acre and a half of land).

When we played, there were no borders. We roamed through yards freely, we climbed trees, we fought duels with tree branches in the middle of the street. We roamed through the forest setting up forts and traps, preparing for the inevitable day we would have to fight guerrilla warfare against the Red Army. Red Dawn came out when I was 8. It was kind of a requirement in the mid-80's that you planned for the Soviet invasion if you were a kid. It was like our zombie apocalypse.

Now, when I visit home...it's painful. I see strip malls where there used to be forest. Corporate office parks where there were farms. There's a big shopping center where the country store used to be...the actual spot where the store was is all parking lot. Where friends' houses used to sit--where I learned to ride a horse, where I learned to shoot a rifle, where I had my first shy kiss--it's all asphalt and manicured shrubbery and tasteful brick storefronts. That little two-lane road is now a busy six-lane highway. The streetlights keep the area permanently lit in a orange sodium glow. Though not obvious, if you listen you can hear traffic noise at all hours of the day or night.

The thing is, it's not like it happened overnight. Which makes it harder to remember the way it used to be before all of the "progress". Some of the development happened when I was in high school. Some of it in college. Some of it after that. So then I'm left going, "Yeah, that used to be ******. Wait, what was it before that?" Sometimes I stare at a patch of buildings, and I really REALLY try to remember. And it just doesn't come. I can remember what it looked like five years ago, ten years ago, maybe 15. But remembering what it was like when I was an actual child just doesn't happen much anymore.

Sorry to sound so maudlin about it. It's just that I'm a very past-oriented person. Probably why I majored in archaeology and history the first time around. To some extent, it's the sadness of an archaeologist seeing the artifacts of his own life being looted and lost.  :-[

I was unaware this was a dick-waving thread.

In fact, I thought the title question was given a context outside of genocides, abuse, and all those other things by the OP.

But maybe that's just me.

Fair enough. Went back and re-read the OP and you are in fact correct. Guess after I read Kael's post it felt kinda trite to complain that "oh noes, they made GI JOE teh suck!".

What Vector said, and in my childhood I was a bloodthirsty sadistic psycho.
Fields of skulls? Torture? Awesome! So that shit just feeds my inner child.
I did a school project on medieval torture and execution methods, once. I was eight at the time. My classmates had nightmares.

What does punch my inner child is watching the original cartoons I used to watch. Man, what crap we romanticise. The Transformer movie-bots don't even remotely look like the originals, so that's just a wholly different franchise with suspiciously similar names, to me.

Well, I read
Quote
Has anyone ever felt something similar? Like peices of their childhood were somehow tarnished or injured by newer incarnations?

So I added that certain experiences made me look back at my childhood and say, well, it's all a manner of perspective.

Feel free to think that it's out of context though, that's also perspective. :)

*shrug*

I went through a period when I was trying to psychologically "kill" my inner child.  That was more than a gut punch.  But it's still off topic, because it wasn't about a "piece of my childhood" being tarnished by a re-experiencing of it later.

You know, this part.

But I think that makes my stance on all of this entirely too clear, so I'll head off for a while so it can become all muddled again.

There is some merit to the idea of an IP being pulled off so much better due to potential and blah blah, nostalgia bluh bluh, whatever.

I really need to make up a reason why I hate the smut of things I like. Its my largest defense of modern remake movies. ´At least it isnt smut.´

And for the Pokemon fans here, look up the Freudean interpretation of the series. First few episodes everything was sorta realistic, up until he was struck by lightning and everything turned into a fantasy land where you dont pay for anything, recurring villians have fantastical machines that always come back and he must give away all his pokemon when moving from region to region. Its terrible and wonderful.
