i can assign a dwarf as a dungeon lord but cant seem to find out what he does..trawled the internet but cant find a thing please help cheers in advance

the dungeon master tames and trains exotic animals, he also steals and wears all of your cloaks.

In the vanilla version of Dwarf Fortress, the Dungeon Master does nothing.  He never shows up at all, and can't be appointed.

If you are seeing an option to appoint a dungeon master, then you've installed a mod.  What the Dungeon Master does then will depend on what mod you've installed.  What he doesn't do is train exotic animals - that function is broken even if you mod the game so he can be manually installed.  He also won't steal and wear every cloak in the fortress.  That was a quirk from an old version that has been gone from the game for a while.

Most likely he'll demand nice rooms and then pass random production mandates, like a mayor or duke that doesn't do anything useful.
