Cave Crocodile Hatchlings
« on: June 20, 2011, 11:57:20 am »

I have quite a few cave crodile hatchlings (tame of course) and they've been caged for the first few years of their lives . . . . I thought most animals could grow to maturity in cages as i have expierienced with bears, cats, dogs, and tigers.  But these hatchlings have been cage for at least five years and have not matured into full cave crocodiles.  Im trying to create an egg industry based on crocodile eggs but with only one egg laying female adult cave crocodile thats kind os hard.  So how long do these things take to mature?

Australian Accent:

Cave crocs? Crikey, she's a beauty!

To be honest, I have no idea. The only thing I've ever had in cages has been lizards, butterflies and the like.

Cave crocs take somewhere around 5-6 years to mature from hatching. I've had it happen numerous times when I choose to embark with a breeding pair. They're quite nice to have around.

They will mature in cages. I always keep the hatchlings in the dining room cage until they're ready for egg duty.

5-6 years? wow.  Ok well while i prepare this massive pen/breeding/nesting area for them back in the cage they go.

Code: [Select]
...
[CASTE_NAME:cave crocodile:cave crocodiles:cave crocodile]
[CHILD:3][GENERAL_CHILD_NAME:cave crocodile hatchling:cave crocodile hatchlings]

...
The RAWs never lie, they take 3 years to mature.

Hrm, that did not line up with my experiences. Maybe I misremembered it, because it does indeed say CHILD:3 in the raws...

I have had cave crocs mature in cages before, though. Perhaps you missed the notification, or have multiple sets in there?

It's pretty easy to miss the maturing notice, even moreso under the masterwork made spam that all of my forts end up having. I checks the maturation cages every season or so to see if there're any newly grown adults to cull and replace the breedstock.

It is likely to miss notifications easily, but age of coming isn't set in stone and RAWs are not holy scriptures, it is possible that creatures are late with growing up. I often check dates of birth with Runesmith, and have noticed that some of my birds and big cats are late.

The same with dwarves, even three month babies can transform into children, and it is possible to have 12 years old dwarves who are still children, and others who are soon to be married (my youngest newlyweds were 13 and 15). Though they are off by couple of months usually, not a couple of years, the same with animals. Creatures who missed they date of growing up will be checked in 28 days again.

Another thing that is even further from my experiences... When my egg-hatched creatures mature, it always happens for that entire egg wave, en masse. It's so precise that every one of them matures in the very same step, producing, "A cave crocodile hatchling has matured. x47" message. All the birds do this too.

Again, I don't have anything other than anecdotal evidence for this. Can anyone confirm Saiko Kila's account and force me to raise a bunch more crocodiles for a screenshot? :D

Here's one explanation: the game only checks if creatures have grown up every once in a while, resulting in mass delayed, yet synchronized, maturation.

Based on what I read so far, I don't think they're going to mature that quickly.  Looks like you'll just have to have patience.  Maybe you should start a dragon-egg scheme in the mean time?

I just looked at the raws, and both Cave Dragons and true Dragons have no child values.  I'm not sure how that works, but it may mean they can lay eggs at birth.  Either that, or there's no way to harvest the eggs for fertilization.  Regardless, the pet multiplier could almost be worth the dwarves lost.

Yeah, creatures the lack the child:# tag tend not to reproduce. Megabeasts and semi-megabeasts won't reproduce at all.
