Free stuff from caravans!!

Yeah!

you had better believe it!

I got everything free!

it was great too, cause I had not set up a craftsdwarf yet. One of my dwarves was throwing a tantrum and walked outside and broke the trade depot when the traders had all their stuff inside. Then they just left with out taking any of their things.

I think I might have seen a posting like this before...

I think that makes your relations with the merchants' faction detoriate. Meaning, they treat that as if you seized those goods. This supposebly also happens when wild animals manage to destroy the caravans, but their bodyguards usually prevent this.

Hmm, I destroyed the trade depot after trading but the caravan hadn't left yet, so they left all my stone crafts on the ground.

So what's my penalty? The problem is my anvil was lying on the cave river bridge (lazy metal smith) and was flooded...

I desperately need a new anvil, or maybe bone armor is the way to go, with lots of totems on poles outside?

My problem with the lost anvil got me thinking of another "bug". Should bones really be destroyed with each new season? Not realistic and that is what the chasm is for, right?

Having the bones become destroyed was requested before.  Realism has tended to shrink before annoyance, at least somewhat.

they're dwarves.  how much realism is real, for goodness sake?  who's to say what really happens in someone else's reality?  i'll take mine over the norm any day   :D

You are a gnome who likes wood, I am a dwarf who likes bones, OK?   ;)

But realistically speaking about game mechanics and the open-endness of this game... Things happen, like you lose your only anvil, and have to wait I don't know how many years to get a new one. So what do you do, restart? Or try to make the best out of bones and all the problems that brings. (crazy elves?)

When and if a magic system is included, who knows, my current fortress might succumb to dark magikks and forge dark weapons of elf bane?

I recently had the happy discovery that bone and shell stored in a stockpile inside do not disappear at the season change.  So just put a small stockpile around your craftsdwarf shop, set it to refuse, and deselect everything except bones, shells, and maybe skulls if totems float your boat.

If you happen to build your workshops all right around your dining room, you'll get the added benefit that some refuse benefits from being hauled a much shorter (and safer) route than going outside.

just disable bones/shells/skulls in the outside pile... hopefully the bones/etc from rotten things will be brought inside... at some point in time..

... or have all the refuse rooms indoors.. making corridors/doorways that minimise the chance of someone wandering in as a shortcut

I can confirm this. I deconstructed the trade depot while the caravan was still parked on it, thought that would get them off my lawn so I could finish building that palisade, but they took off and left everything there. Looks like the packing up of goods before they leave is tied to the existence of the depot.

2006...  I'd get out in a hurry if somebody tore up the building I was in.  If there weren't dwarves, they'll hold it against you.
