No water on map and cavern
« on: June 17, 2011, 07:59:30 pm »

I have no water on my map (no murky pools) and no water in the 100% explored cavern. I'm doomed once the injured dwarves start to pile up, aren't I?

Yes you are, unless you can somehow heal them without washing them, very quickly.  Or DFHack some water in.

No water? Urgh. I'd use DFLiquids.

Only one cavern?  Usually one of the three gets a pond.

If I ever edit the water layer cavern thingy in Advanced World Gen I get no water in the caverns. That means no plants or trees or grass down there too. :(

I think that's not a problem of environment, but one of ideology.
Throw in a bit of fascism and zero-tolerance to your fort, and you'll find it natural that anyone who gets hurt and can't heal in a month or two does not deserve to live.
Also, don't make a hospital. If there's no hospital, lightly wounded dwarves will not rest and will continue drinking booze.

dtw, has anyone tried building a well over magma? maybe it would make it drinkable in a manner similar to saltwater.

Because, in dorf minds, molten rock is the same as salty water.

It might be worth the time to run a bunch of exploratory shafts around the map, especially if you can remember if there was a river near you embark, check that side first - you might get lucky and find an aquifier.

Other than that, if there are any dried out ponds, cut a single tile tunnel underneath and then up into the middle of the pond to collect water from rain, and set up a few floodgates so you can slowly gather water for emergencies.

How did I miss the existence of this thread?
(Don't attempt to answer that.  Down that path lies ... well I was going to say madness but you all run towards madness as if it was made from chocolate and puppies.  Just forget I said anything.)

I've heard that if you change the worldgen settings to get less than 3 caverns that sometimes they'll have no water.

I've had it happen once in a vanilla small world.  It's just sheer bad luck, and it's awful.  You don't get the underground moss and trees either.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

Armok created Arrakis to train the faithful. Let the weak perish - it is the law.
