You have to be in hard mode for everything but snow and the things made from snow. I have a video that I will post soon showing me going from a new world to Santa with my main character. The presents drop from any non-statue monster in hard mode and can be opened for any of the candy blocks and the snow globe. The snow globe summons the frost legion which when you beat it Santa will show up and Santa sells the Santa suit and lights which seem to need power.

Also of note, the snowmen are hard modes goblin army. If you have a hard time with goblins these things will wreck you up.

Also I think that the music box spamming still works if you put it on a table.

Where do the new items come in/how do you make them?

Snow is found in the snow biome, and can be crafted into Snow Bricks and Snow Brick Walls. Mobs in 1.1.1 worlds will drop different presents (the only difference is color). You can right click these, and they will give you either candy cane bricks (red or green) or a snowglobe. The bricks are building material, and can be made into backwall. The snowglobe is a boss item that summons the Snow Horde, an invasion of hardmode level snowmen gangsters who drop snow and presents. This is all I can personally confirm, but of course there are rumors about the Hogfather Santa.

Also confirmed: statue-spawned mobs will not drop presents (tested on slimes and mimics).


I've got a ton of prewall gear kicking around, and I'd be happy to give you a molten hamaxe if you want one. Once the server is updated, that is. 


Ninja edit: I've confirmed that you do not need to be in hardmode for present drops. Heck, pretty much everyone on Aklyon's server has.

Yep no need for hard mode for presents to drop, however you do seem to need to be in hard mode for snowglobes to have a chance of turning up in presents.

If you are having problems with the snowmen army, you can fight them from platforms above them as they don't shoot upwards(although the snowballers do fling snow up at you).

edit: seems that you don't need hardmode after all for globes to drop. However they seem to have a much higher drop rate on hardmode worlds.

Again, false. We got multiple snowglobe drops and summoned the snowmen several times in a pre-wall world. The snowmen are hardmode in terms of difficulty, not required progress.

Anyway the wiki says that they can only be obtained after beating the wall of flesh so I will mention me being wrong about presents only dropping in hard mode in my video but the fact about snow globes only during hard mode I am going to include as that is what the wiki says.

Problem is that the wiki is edited by, surprise suprise, people like us, and we make mistakes. But we had multiple snow globe drops in a pre-hardmode world, and observed evidence tends to trump what someone entered on a wiki in my book.

Wiki is wrong. It seems that the drop rate for globes is much lower on non hardmode worlds but it is not a requirement to be in hardmode to get one. I just managed to have one drop on my non hardmode homebase world after opening around 500 presents.

Should you find a bunch of goldfish and bunny spawners, now's a good time to use them. Just corruptify the creatures spawned and keep producing more. It obviously works best in a bloodmoon, where the bunnies and goldfishes turn corrupt instantly.

Doing that will net you presents, and possibly tons of sno-globes, when the corrupted creatures are killed.

(disclaimer: This should work, theoretically, since corrupted bunnies and goldfishes do not count as spawned from a statue. I still need to prove this though.)

Alternatively, if you are able to quickly take it out by repeatedly killing the head section, summoning the eater of worlds with worm food can net you many presents in a short space of time, particularly if you have a massive stockpile of worm food.

The snow biome? No, you'll have to import it into your world.

The present drops? They're everywhere, even in old worlds. Presents aren't tied up into the snow biome, so you can get some in the underground corruption, or even hell.
