Goblin Escape Artistists?
« on: May 31, 2011, 06:03:46 pm »

Umm yeah so i was trying to sell goblins in cages to some traders but when i set up my dorfs to transport them to the depot the goblins burst out of their cages and procede to hack of my poor plaything dwarfs arms.  So my question is, what am I doing wrong?

This is a known bug/feature. When dwarves move a cage to the depot, they always dump out the contents first. There's no way to sell captured animals/goblins that I know of. On the other hand, it's useful for getting squirrels and large roaches out of cages.

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.

Look on the bright side: At least you didn't find this out while trying to sell off a bronze colussus.

Yeah, two main ways to get a goblin out of a cage:

1) Build the cage in a room (b -> j, then hit 'x' at the cage selection prompt to see individual cages and spot which one has the goblin in it). Then build a lever. Then link the lever to the cage. Then station your military in the room and lock the doors. Then pull the lever to open the cage and let the fun begin.

2) Designate a pit zone over something handy. Good choices are a deep pit (10 z levels or more is very effective, if messy), a body of water with no way out, magma, a room full of military in need of practice, or a cavern with a handy forgotten beast. Then select the goblin to be pitted and a dwarf will take him out of the cage and toss him in the pit. This works fine with goblin soldiers (I think the dwarves grab them by the ears and drag them along), but goblin thieves are likely to escape before getting tossed in the pit. So thieves pretty much require method #1.
