Outdoor Bins and Bags Disappearing...
« on: April 12, 2008, 08:00:00 pm »

some containers in my stockpiles outside are going missing.  At first I thought this was a bit strange but probably something I did wrong, but now I KNOW it to be something faulty by several lines of evidence.
1. I made 10 leather bags to store seeds, and had all my bags filled with seeds (I had more then 10), all placed in food stockpiles set to be seed specific, aboveground.  Later, I had 1 bag, the only one that wasn't used for anything.  Meanwhile, I had piles of 20+ seeds sitting where there used to be a bag filled with seed.  The bag had 'disappeared' from around the seeds.  All of them.  These were in an outdoor stockpile (I am just passing my fullyear mark, as in my second spring is coming with my first elven caravan, so I haven't even started moving things indoors yet as the indoors is unfinished, and will be worked on after the defenses.)
2. I had all my amunition in bins in ammo stockpiles.  I had 10 total bins.  4 were used for amunition, 4 for cloth, 2 I don't know what they were used for.  Now I have only 4 total bins: the 4 which had cloth.  The ammo bins and other 2 wherever they went are gone, and in their places are piles of bolts, in abundance as though they had been .

I am relativley sure they are not being stolen as we have had a total of 2 kobolds the entire year, and are always milling about in that area, so would have more encounters if there were enough kobolds to steal them all.

And again, my cloth ones were unaffected, my booze and food piles, all outside as well, are not encountering this problem...

Have you tried going to the stocks screen (from the 'z' status screen) and checking on your bins? You can zoom to them from there.

The stock screen WAS one of the ways I used to find how many bins and bags existed.  Like I said, 4 bins existed, 1 bag existed, by the end, and they were easily found.  Even if it were, what remains is the fact that I have piles of 10+ 'plump helmut spawn' (I have used some since) and other seeds in a single square, right where there used to be a bag full of those very seeds, while dwarves do not stack things into single squares like that on their own.

Hmm.... more disappearing containers - I had a similar thing where I noticed various drinks all over the floor in the food stockpile.  They were all even different colors!  The stockpile was indoors in my case, however.

Could it be possible that your dwarwes repeatedly walked over those containers and destroyed them?

I think this bug exists.  I've had messages of my carpenter losing masterwork things and I have no clue what was being lost- there were no theiving creatures, runaway magma, collapsing bridges, etc.  So it could be that I was losing masterwork bins for no reason.

Now this is odd; I decided to export some images of my current fort, and discovered some barrels where there aren't any. Here is the relevant image, and hereis a save taken only a few ticks after those images were exported. As you can see, where the image says there are barrels, the game says there are none. Perhaps it's related to what people were describing above?

Edit: actually, that image is just generally all kinds of messed up, so I'm guessing that it's just a bug in the exporter. Never mind. :\

I must report that in a new fort, the same thing has happened again.  This time I had a general stockpile-for-everything.  I am still in my first year.  The bags disappeared from around the seeds, leaving, again, a single square containing many unbagged seeds.  Furthermore, over 200 booze disappeared somewhere between early winter and mid winter, impossible for the dwarves to drink that much.  I suspect the barrels disappeared and the booze was mopped up since I can't find it on the floor.  The total number of barrels in my fort is now just over 10, all full of plants, despite that I started the fort with over 30, and produced 10 more when I had so much booze and food it wouldn't all fit.  Suddenly without booze, without empty barrels, and with no water in sight, all hell broke loose, since I didn't even realize it until they were thirsty and I hadn't a clue why.  I currently have 4 of my 7 original dwarves, 2 are injured because of other dwarves tantruming (both of whom already died of thirst) and 2 of whom are now desperately trying to take what little stock I have in wood and turn it into barrels, and cook something to clear out some barrels.  Once I have barrels, both can brew... Anyway:
Toady: this is an annoying bug!  Please take heed!  Death by barrels is not just a donkey kong thing.

I can't do anything about it without a save that reproduces it (that is, just before something disappeara).  I haven't had it happen and have no idea why it would happen.

Hmmm... I guess it won't get fixed then... I have modded the hell out of my game.  But... it was all just geology, plant, and animal modifications, nothing more...

OH!  I believe I just WATCHED IT HAPPEN!  And I suddenly think it may not have been a bug at all, and apologize for pestering you...

BUT I have a question.  Does having dwarves 'walk on' barrels, as in the barrel is in their path, damage and eventually destroy these barrels?  Basically that is what I just observed: I watched as the barrel disappeared JUST as the dwarf walked over it.  The result was the usual: a whole lot of seeds left laying on a single square where the barrel used to hold them.

However, Counter hypothesis question: It seems that a vermin with Immolate was present at the time as well.  Could it be this fire-vermin that I modded in (I am right next to magma) be the cause of the disappearing barrels?

Yep, that fixed it.  I removed Immolate from my modded in vermin, and poof, I have yet to see the problem occuring!  Was this the propper solution, or was it a fluke that this worked?

Yeah, fire vermin can do it, I believe.  They've been in the game since before fire, and they haven't been updated to start an actual fire from the item.

Confirmed: I removed [IMMOLATE] from my fire vermin, and have not seen this problem since.  Sorry to have bothered you, no bug to report ^.^

Ironically someone on the dwarf mode forum said something about havok/explosion/fire in one's brew pile if a fire snake (or in general an organism with immolate) gets in, but my obsrvation was not only do they not light brew on fire even when on the tile in which the brew is laying on the floor (having previously destroyed the barrel in which the brew was kept).  So... personal observations are countering someone's conjecture.  Anyway...
