Well, what will really determine it for me is if Terraria 2 shows up on Kickstarter. The decision to just pile more easy money on top of his money, or not as a matter of principle, is something I will take note of.

As for Starbound, when they announced that they'd sold stuff to Tiy they made it clear then he was planning to make a game with it. So I find it hard to believe Redigit sees them a competition, as a reason to do an update.

For anyone on forsaken's server: I've got a Heat Ray, a Possessed Hatchet, and a Picksaw up for trade. I'll exchange any of them for a piece of Spectre armor (that I don't have yet) or for a dungeon key on a 1:1 basis. I'll also buy the dungeon keys for 2 plat each.
Head to the dungeon (not jungle) and kill enemies.  Certain ones will die and spawn a ghost, and when the ghost dies it drops ectoplasm.  This ectoplasm is the only item used to craft spectral armor, pick, axe, and paint supplies - that's right, you craft a paint brush, paint roller, and pain scraper here.  You can also buy regular ones from the painter NPC.

I'd like tha tpicksaw, but I don't think you'd be willing to trade it for a spectral pickaxe

It's been a long time since I played Terraria, but I am enjoying it.

I like the new alternate metals, shame all the early ones are gray, but that's just an inherent problem with reality, not the game.

Also, I managed to get a diamond staff at what I can only assume is extremely early to get it. Just sheer luck with spelunking to find the resources is all.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

The gem staves are quite powerful for the time you can get them.

Terraria 2 would sit a lot better with me if I hadn't kept TerrariaOnline on my bookmarks list. As-is, I check it every couple of days, and have for months. Many times at least half of the news items are advertisements to buy Terraria on (x platform) because its new! Once it was literally 4 advertisements and 1 news article about a building competition. This does not inspire confidence.

However:

If he actually branched Terraria away from Starbound and made T2 something like a metroidvania generator with lush sprite graphics, nice music, and tons of loot (with a base-building section too) I could see it doing well in its own right. Starbound looks to be a big adventure game with exploration and dungeoneering on the side, so I could see them both working without stepping on too many toes.

ON-Topic rant:
WHY WON'T DYES STACK?! WHYYYYY?!!? Oh well the source ingredients do...

The new sky islands are pretty impressive, too. I'm a fan.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.
