I guess just get some decent armor (and rocket boots + ball o' hurt) then fight the Eater of Worlds over and over, use the scales to make shadow armor.

I have started a new game on a new world (small)  on hard core.

EOW Isn't even that hard if you have something decent to whack him with like a gold broadsword. The first time I killed him I was in full iron armor with a gold sword.

Two words:

Vile Powder.

Grenades work quite well if you can afford them and avoid blowing yourself up. And spiky balls will annihilate EOW if you've had the (mis)fortune of having a goblin invasion already.

I prefer grenading everything. I'm not going to be doing any of that for a while though because I've only found two life crystals and one underground chest. I've spent most of my time making a decent-looking above-ground base and digging a not-quite-hellevator that only goes down to the cavern layer (which is where my real fortress will be).

EDIT: I opened up Terrafirma to poke around in the cave my cavernvator ended up in, and I found six life crystals, four or so chests, and some three billion gold deposits in fairly close proximity. It looks like the only life crystal in a place I wouldn't have been able to find on my own just by holding torches to the walls/floors is in an area that I'll probably be clearing out for the fort.

Make spelunker potions, moonglow and blinkroot can be multiplied from a single seed to between 64-729 crops in an in-game week provided you have enough clay pots and even need that many. Since you've found lots of gold deposits you won't have any issue with that ingredient.

After you make a few, chug em, hit full screen and travel normally, you'll find a lot more than you ever would searching manually.

I think that Hardcore's only fun on multiplayer because when you die, everyone can mock you(r ghost).

I'd guess the background and stone distribution means corruption spreads across the world after the "special event" thing, and moves the game into a higher tier world with the same geography as before. Either way, lots of new items there, looks fun, DRILL HOLY WATER RED ARMOR etc.

Actually, its not a halberd, it looks more like a glaive or naginata.
