Three. What should I do with them? (I'd rather keep them alive)

They're sentient, they're food, and we're dwarves. Do the math.

Catch them in cage traps, put them in cages in your dining room.

From my experiments, it appears to be impossible to have your dwarves actually eat them.

Dip them in magma, then re-cage and dump them in a pit at your entrance, possibly under a dodge-this trap or old-school retracting bridge.
While PHMs have an ignition point, they don't take damage from fire or heat. Therefore, you have eternally burning sentries. Use them as you will.

They are not eatable, not trainable, not brewable, not worth it for war or hunting, and not butcherable. They are pretty much useless really.

... Wait, they burn indefinitely ? That might actually be fun... a living, moving lignite bin :P

We must ignite the plump helmet men and then release them upon sieges! The goblins won't know what (the fuck just) hit them!

I just tested this in a slightly modded Arena mode.  Plump Helmet Men do indeed seem to burn forever with no ill effects.  There's a lot of pain at first, but then they settle down and seem fine.

They don't seem to set creatures in the same tile on fire.  They do set anything flammable they pick up on fire, but there's no way to make a creature pick something up in fortress mode.

Endless smoke generator?  Does prolonged exposure to smoke do anything to goblins and elves?

Interestingly, burning plump helmet men seem to automatically clean blood and other contaminates off of adjacent tiles as they walk by.  It may be possible to utilize burning plump helmet men as a forgotten beast contamination cleanup crew.

The very image of a modern, forward-thinking fortress, which puts the inferior races to work at useful tasks rather than slaughtering them. All hail progress?

It's highly unlikely that they would burn forever - wait at least a year before drawing any conclusions.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

This thread has promise.

Clearly, someone should build a wooden trade depot surrounded by wooden roads and bring one of these fellows out to meet the elves when they come to trade.

You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

You should keep them for parties.

They are Fungi's to hang out with.
