Legendary Non-Artifacts?
« on: May 08, 2011, 07:53:22 pm »

I don't know what is up with this, but I thought I'd register just to share a few items I found sitting in my Gem Setter's workshop.

Anyone else have this happen? I imagine it bugged out and my Gem Setter keeps encrusting the same few goods over and over again. I've got an entire stockpile of undecorated Finished Goods for him to decorate sitting right next to his workshop.

Any given object may have 1 of each type of decoration.  Thus, many different gem types may be stacked onto a single item, same with metals.  I believe that cloth and leather may be stacked infinitely, not sure, since they create images rather than normal decorations.  You can easily get far above artifact value by encrusting and studding a single piece of equipment.  Statues can become worth more than the entire fort.

Ah, good to know. I looked on the wiki and poked around the forum and didn't see any mention of this phenomena, but now I know for future use. Up until that happened I just saw items decorated with a single gem, then put back into the stockpile and never touched again until I sold it.

It depends on the stockpiles, mostly.  When decorating, a dwarf picks the closest object to decorate and the closest gem/metal/leather to use.  Thus, if there are no stockpiles, the dwarf will grab a goblet and a clear diamond, and encrust it.  Then he'll grab the same goblet, since it's closest (in the workshop) and he'll grab a red diamond, continued until you run out of gems.  I regularly buy a caravan's worth of all gem types and one platinum bar, turn the bar into goblets, toss the gems into the jeweler's station, and produce something worth hundreds of thousands of dorfbucks.  I usually end up with heavy quality control, allowing 3 of each gem type into carefully regulated stockpiles to ensure that my 3 goblets end up astounding.  There's usually a forge in the area too, and I'll buy metals to encrust onto these goblets.

I'm usually nominated for a baron by year 3...

...That is far more micromanaging than I'm willing to put into this game. But like I said, those items, along with a few others like them are just sitting in the jeweler's workshop. Guess my hauler dwarfs have gotten lazy and aren't putting them away once Urist McGemSetter finishes with them. Maybe the two strange moods that have used that workshop have something to do with it?

I can attest that sewn images do not stack infinitely. Additionally, you may have a single cumulative sewn image on an item, be it cloth or leather.

Actually not so much once you get it set up.  It takes a lot of space though...  Set a jeweler's workshop, some food and booze stockpiles because he'll be there for a long time, and then 3 squares of stockpile that accept one gem with no bins used.  Another 3 squares that only accept another type with no bins used.  Repeat as needed and as space allows.  Another stockpile that accepts only goblets (I prefer to accept only masterwork goblets) and then a lever inside the room, which is linked to the room's door.  Have the jeweler pull the lever, then assign things to be encrusted, and he'll labor away.  More recently, I've started doing this with more rounded quantities, taking up less floorspace as bins are used and encrusting in different ways, but you get the idea.  Once set up, haulers will put things in the encrusting lab automatically, and then you just need to assign things for encrusting!

Eh, maybe I'll look into that once I've finished my current project. A Boatmurdered-style kill 'em all with Magma switch. Probably not the smartest thing to do, since in this embark alone I've had a lot of Fun with magma and elves...

(I prefer to accept only masterwork goblets)

fully agree with your method, i was doing more or less the same. but why goblets? a goblet isn't really the item i'd blow my precious star sapphires on...

Did somebody just rule 34 two veins of metal?

Mostly because you get 3 per bar, and I like to think of the -fantastic- drinking cups which then get sewer brew sloshed in them by a dwarven peasant.

I once did something similar for cinnabar statues. 4 statues decorated with absolutely every gem and metal in the game. They adorned my sacrificial altar room made of artifact furniture.

In my recent fort, I tried doing something similar but with bone for my weapons. It's already year 5 by the time I let my soldiers upgrade from their basic training gear to their real weapons.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

I do this all the time.

I make a stockpile that accepts only masterwork finished goods, weapons, and armor. This stockpile is the closest to my workshops. The non-masterwork stuff is further away.

This means that the masterworks tend to absorb all of the decorations I throw at them. I just let the dwarf decorate whatever he wants, and since he always picks the closest object, this means that over the years all of those masterworks will soak up an immense amount of decorations. A full page of decoration isn't uncommon. Its also not uncommon for a single item to be worth over 100k.

Yes, but not just some random bug: large gems currently will never get stored in stockpiles.  This means they sit around forever in the jeweler's workshop.  Which means that they're the closest Finished Good when you go to encrust finished goods.  Every time.

You can still ship them off to the trade depot, IIRC, and sell them for some obscene amount.
